Not a good thing, not worth the troubles you can get into.

Hmmm... working at a bar I can tell you this much. (This applies in Louisiana, possibly all states)...

It is a federal offense to have identification from two different states, or two forms of identification at all actually.

If you get caught and prosecuted it is 6 months in jail and up to a $5000 fine, the minimum fine is $500.

Your best bet of getting by with a fake ID is having one fabricated with your real name, etc and your actual picture, this way when the bartender (Me) thinks it is questionable and asks for back up, you can show him your credit card with a matching name on it.

Fake ID's that don't have your actual picture on it never work, unless the bar is just desparate for your business.

For a good fake ID you can pay up to $100 if it isn't scannable. For an ID that is scannable you can pay upwards of $200. If you know a person who makes the IDs you should be able to get an ID between $40-$80. I am talking about top quality IDs too.

On a side note, I learned the prices from hearing kids scream... "You can't take that I paid $140..."
or... "Scan it, I dare you, it's real, I swear"
When they keep up the ranting and raving I tell them, "Hey buddy if you dont trust my judgement on if it is fake or not, just go get the cop over there to come here and check the ID for me, and if he says it is real I will give it back and serve you."
Of course they leave.

It is typically my policy to take people's fake IDs and laugh at them. I then turn it into the Manager, who in turn delivers them to the Police. This not only saves me from selling to minors, but it lets the cops know that we are actually doing our job and carding. And most of all it keeps underage kids from drinking. Not that it is necessarily evil to drink underage if you are responsible about it, everybody is different, some people can handle the responsibility, others get wrapped around telephone poles, but I am not about to be the one who lets either of those happen.

What every 18 year old with a fake ID does, pretend like he is 21. I mean, it is hard to blame him. I am sure that all/most of you have been there. It is hard to be able to go to a bar and watch everybody else drink. Especially when the drinking age used to be 18 anyway.

I find it offensive that someone 18 years old can vote on the leadership and direction of this nation, can lay down his life to save its principles and can be held legally responsible for all his decisions but he can't have a fucking beer with dinner.

It's a stupid law and I wouldn't fault you for wanting to break it.

If you know someone that looks like you and is of age, your best bet will be to have him report his license lost and get a new one, leaving you the old one. Otherwise, expect to pay $100 for a decent fake in most places, but also expect to not get into any good bars if you live in a large city.

And like all violations of our laws, just or not, if you get caught, it's your ass and the results can be pretty serious as illustrated above.

All joking aside, there is a very serious side to this topic. I'm not here to argue whether or not an 18 year old should be able to drink, but rather to discuss the potential consequences of those actions. The number of drunk driving related deaths in this country is far too high, and I gotta believe the percentage of those attributed to underage drinking is fairly significant. I remember what it was like being 18. I felt invincible, but it's that kind of mindset that can potentially lead to serious danger. Call me a boyscout if you want, but anyone who thinks drinking and driving is a good idea is a total idiot. I'm not suggesting anyone here is going to be irresponsible, but it's a serious problem that I think needs addressing in this topic.

I didn't feel this strongly about it before I had kids, but now that I'm a father I think about these things. If any of my kids end up in a wheelchair, or heaven forbid, a coffin due to some idiot's poor judgement, so help me, I will make it my personal mission to make whatever's left of that person's life a living hell.

All I'm saying is, if you want to drink like an adult, you better be prepared to act like one.
