So with my upcoming bonus I'm looking to possibly upgrade my ancient TV (its older than some of the kids at the HS across the street). Looking for something in the 27" area with HDTV support, any opinions?

if you watch a lot of sports or anything with fast action, you're better off getting a plasma. lcd tends to blur the image. what is your price range? also, are you talking lcd or lcd projection?

rear projection LCD is junk.. if he wants a small tv... stay with driect view... a good Sharp Aquos is amazing... they make them up to 40" now. and as far as motion... ehhhhh not really. LCD DV has so many other advantages over other platforms. most plasma is junk, btw.
if you want a big projection go with a good CRT (either rear or front) but rear is more practical.

first start by deciding the size you want... you mentioned 27"... a 30" widescreen is SMALL! i have a 34" toshiba in my bedroom, it's tiny... (to me)
but decide size first

MOST. you can't walk into a CC or BB and buy an elite.
on the contrary...best buys that have a magnolia section carries elites and fujitsus...and btw, the aquos is a sweet lcd tv...what is the largest that it comes in?

are you serious? i spent quite some time in the vaio store in tyson's corner in dc. there are quite a few 10+k tvs in there that are rplcd. how is it junk? the best tvs on the market are rplcd, dlp, or plasma(garbage imo). good luck trying to find a rpcrt tv. they're not being manufactured that much anymore. the only advantage of a rpcrt tv is the way it handles blacks. lcd and dlp tvs produce pictures with light, not with the absence of it, so blacks always look better on rpcrt tvs.
my roomate is a sales manager at a high end electronics store, and we have two of these things in our apartment along with a lot of av equipment to go along with them. msb, i respect your knowledge, but you're way off on this one. the majority of sony's tvs are rplcd now. they don't make a plasma, and their dv line isn't big at all. the dv tvs in the 30-40" range do look pretty good though. the reason for that is the size of the tv. the larger the screen size, the more distortion your eyes will catch. that's why i'd never buy an 80" tv. it looks like shit. i'd much rather have a 46". walk into any electronics store and look at tvs. 70% of what you'll see big screen wise will be rplcd tvs. bet.
