ed tv is 480p. that's dvd quality. true hd is 720 or higher, hence the designations ed and hd.

the sony one the three of us have works beautifully, and i'm VERY picky about how the picture on my tv looks. i'm not really sold on the hdmi thing, since i was using dvi before with no problems or complaints.

mabye your tv isn't calibrated correctly. did you use the calibration dvd?

my roomate is a sales manager at a high end electronics store, and we have two of these things in our apartment along with a lot of av equipment to go along with them. msb, i respect your knowledge, but you're way off on this one. the majority of sony's tvs are rplcd now. they don't make a plasma, and their dv line isn't big at all. the dv tvs in the 30-40" range do look pretty good though. the reason for that is the size of the tv. the larger the screen size, the more distortion your eyes will catch. that's why i'd never buy an 80" tv. it looks like shit. i'd much rather have a 46". walk into any electronics store and look at tvs. 70% of what you'll see big screen wise will be rplcd tvs. bet.

for starters... NEVER judge a tv (or any electronic) by cost. BIG mistake. a few of the higer end LCD proj i have heard good things about - but i have not seen them so i cannot comment. but most of the ones you find in normal stores ARE junk INCLUDING sony. plus i don't think he is looking to spend $10,000 so there is no need to go there....

as far as rear projection CRTs - good ones are still being made but yes is heavily decling (mostly due to consumer demand for smaller cabinents, flat panels, etc) for most consumers -- look and it being practical to fit into the decor the way they want is much more important than the picture. and lets face it -- and HD display is better then the best dispay 5 years ago. so thats not too bad...

but you did state one of the biggest things for CRTs - is the black levels... mos tother displays especially RPLCDs and cheap plasmas just cannot do that well. - sorry, but to me that is automatic "junk"
don't diss RPCRTs -- any knowledgeable person in the business will tell you that it is still one of the best pics you can get for that type of tv. (not to be compared to a front projector tho...)

that scares me... don't get caught into sony too much.. (like some of my other friends) they just follow the market and what the "average" consumer wants. which is what i said above. however, some of their products happen to be the best (some) just don't think that what they are doing is always "the best" in quality. far from it. (espeicially in the audio realm) i wish they enver stepped into that.

hey. i know the best pics you're going to be able to get are on rpcrt or dv tvs. i won't argue with you there. your designation of rpcrt technology as junk isn't really fair. think about the way rplcd and dlp technology works. black is the absence of light. dlp stands for digital light production. see what i mean? rpcrt isn't junk. some of the best tvs i've seen are sony sxrd tvs. they're rplcd.

your comment about tvs in normal retail stores, especially best buy, is true. the tvs i saw were in a sony store, and they're tvs you'd NEVER see in ANY retail chain store like best buy or circuit city. go to sony's website and check their tvs out. msb, i live with a professional, and if i asked him what brand tv has the best picture everyday for the next ten years, he's gonna say, "sony."

i have a rpcrt 46"(i've read in multiple places that 42-46" is the ideal size for a tv for the picture to be as close to what it was intended to look like) sony and he has a 51" rplcd sony. both were bought within months of eachother, so they're the same year's models(two years old). i swear my tv looks better for the same reason i think most rpcrt tvs look better than their rplcd counterparts(size being equal or close in comparrison). black levels.

and, oh yeah, NEVER judge a tv by what you see in the store. the brightness, picture, color, etc levels are WAY higher than what they should be in one's home.
