This is the most common sleeping position, adopted by 41% of the 1,000 people who took part in the survey. More than twice as many women as men tend to adopt this position.
Log (15%): Lying on your side with both arms down by your side. These sleepers are easy going, social people who like being part of the in-crowd, and who are trusting of strangers. However, they may be gullible.
The yearner (13%): People who sleep on their side with both arms out in front are said to have an open nature, but can be suspicious, cynical. They are slow to make up their minds, but once they have taken a decision, they are unlikely ever to change it.
Soldier (8%): Lying on your back with both arms pinned to your sides. People who sleep in this position are generally quiet and reserved. They don't like a fuss, but set themselves and others high standards.
Freefall (7%): Lying on your front with your hands around the pillow, and your head turned to one side. Often gregarious and brash people, but can be nervy and thin-skinned underneath, and don't like criticism, or extreme situations.
Starfish (5%): Lying on your back with both arms up around the pillow. These sleepers make good friends because they are always ready to listen to others, and offer help when needed. They generally don't like to be the centre of attention.
im a 7% freefall sleeper, seems pretty good description of me

I don't think I have a "normal" position. Mostly back and side, but on occassion, I'll sleep on my stomach. I've fallen asleep sitting up before (on a couch, watching a movie, etc.) but almost never sleep on an airplane.

Ever have those moments where you're so tired you just dive on to your bed face first and 30 minutes later wake up? Or when you crash at your friend's pad and you take the couch, you usually sleep on your back or sleep on your side. Ever take a nap at work in somebody's vacant office when that person is off at a jobsite for several days and he's got the quiet office? I have. I've been so tired I've knocked out while lying on my back with my arms across my chest for warmth. In general I either sleep on my side cradling a pillow or on my back but typically I do alternate.

Good point. As it is just a theory, I'm sure it's not accurate. I flip around like I have ADHD so what does that mean? Maybe I should get a prescription.

Spend a night in Heathrow airport (London) waiting for your 6am flight to Chicago and you will knock out before you know it and snore loudly on the plane.

I'm a deep sleeper too. When I'm asleep I completely shut the world out. I've slept through thunderstorms and earthquakes.

I sleep light when I am alone. If I have someone with me I feel safer and sleep alot better.

Ditto on that, I'm totally dead to the world when I fall asleep. A few years ago a high voltage transformer about 50' outside my room got struck by lightning and exploded...slept right through it. I can't sleep past 8am though unless I'm sick which sucks.

Mine used to wake me up by bouncing baseballs, basketballs, soccerballs, boots, whatever was next to my door off me. Didn't always work.
