Anybody else find this extremely stupid and scary? How does this even happen in this day and age of terrorism?
Edit: Not sure how involved the company is in security or how much say they have in how the port is run. Can they shut down a port if they so choose?

yay ... someone online at 5:41 AM ... why you up so early?
I understand the security risks but don't feel they're a big risk. What perturbs me is the outsourcing but then I guess the economy kinda dictates the flow of ownership sometimes

I have to be at work by 7. I work four 9's and a 4 on Fridays.

"I would hope that our friends in Abu Dhabi would not be offended by the fact that in our democracy, we debate these things," Rice said in the interview with the Arab journalists.
Another brilliant statement from Condi.

So long as the Fed keeps control over security inspections, I don't see any issues. If the UAE can do it cheaper than a US firm (unless it's UAE state-subsidized), then it's just the way of capitalism.

even if there is very strict control over the ports, there is still a chance of something being snuck into the US. i think its a stupid idea, and even if it saving the US money, we should be more concerned with our safety then saving costs. i could name a few programs that would be more beneficial cutting then anything that can inadvaretely effect our safety. not only where a bunch of miliatary bases closed, now this. this is just ridiculous imo

I agree and I don't get it either Dude. I'm going to read up on this some more and talk about it tomorrow.

You might be right on this GZire, afterall, it was already done by a foreign contractor, most of the employees are from the US I'll bet.

If I wanted to sneak in really nasty crap, I wouldn't go to a major port. Hey it's no different than what's in place right now. I don't think the terrorists would use major ports anyway, most of the smart coke smugglers don't.

Some items you might want to consider. Almost 90% of our ports are managed by foreign contries. The UAE company is a management firm. You will see very few nationals working at this port. It will be mostly managed by americans. I think we are getting a little paranoid here. The real concern is when these trailers are loaded before they even reach our shores. That is when the problems start. Once they are here, it is almost like it is to late. I mean what percentage of all those cargo trailers are inspected.. maybe 1%? We are very sensitive to anything coming from Muslim countries, and rightly so. We live in a very dangerous world, with religious zealots going bonkers all over... not to comforting to be an american right now. But this Port issue I feel is a little overblown.

Having worked with TV news, I see your point here, they really do try to sensationalize every story like this, you never see the good points, only what they want to tell you, the bad stuff!
