Have you ever seen "Next" on MTV? One girl made the guy get a colonic. Needless to say, when he was given the opportunity to take the $100+ or a second date, he took the money.
Hiking around the historic or beautiful neighborhoods near your town, ice skating, 5K winter walk, visit to something haunted or scenic or even some sort of museum or show that you see by walking. Do you ever do volunteer work on houses for homeless or with kids and competitions? or to help with the sign up or running of the marathons? or an athletic club? Invite her to see a little part of your life since you are an athlete.
It is only gay if two guys are are buttf*cking, head is not considered to me to fit within a healthy dose of (I know it is not a word but I am petitioning to get it to be a word) faggotry.
Whatever you do just don't plan such a disasterous date as I did last night. I worked the dude up for three weeks and shaved and went over. I stupidly assumed that any bodybuilding competions were years ago and that he would not retain any of that strength and endurance. Also I went to Steak and Shake after with a knot in my hair, scared the patrons, and ate a burger and fries with melted cheese and onion rings (when I am supposed to be eating healthy these days), fell asleep in my own bed and apparently grinded my teeth or something all night.
Today I barely can make it through this day. I have literally got to be the most assinine and angry human on the planet today. Planning is actually a great idea and I wish you better luck than I have in my life.

Those are great suggestions Susan. A good place here is the Sandia Tram, fantastic views. OMG, that late night snack sounds pretty unhealthy! Don't bag on yourself!

Over the few weeks I had the opportunity to go on two first dates and both were over dinner and both worked out very nicely. Just find a fun restaurant that has plenty of good salad on the menu (chicks love to order salad that first time out of the gate) and a good lively atmoshphere. Not too loud though, the last thing you want to do is come across hard of hearing by saying "excuse me?" a lot
When I was in Boston, there was so much to do. Fanuel Hall has all kinds of things to do or just walk in.
And nobody mentioned the theatre? Boston has a theatre culture that few cities can rival. There are a lot of good shows out there or even a play.
Walking around the old haunted sites seems like a good idea too.
Also, since I'm in the architecture/design/construction business, I personally would see if I could walk that new suspension bridge you guys have. That bridge is gorgeous (The Leonard P. Zakim-Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge; architect: Christian Menn). A tour of advance and historic architecture in your city is not only intellectually stimulating and mentally rewarding, but also relatively inexpensive. I've done similar tours in L.A.
Oh, and whatever I mentioned above - you MUST follow it with dinner and drinks!

I'm not actually sure if you can walk across that bridge. I'm pretty sure it's a highway type thing that goes across it. I've driven across it several times, but only at night and I didn't notice if there was a fenced in sidewalk on the side or not.
These are more along the lines of the types of non-typical things I was hoping to hear people suggest.

My first date with my now fiancee: dinner at a discreet, cozy, one-of-a-kind Italian restaurant in the Gaslamp quarter in downtown San Diego followed by two good seats at the Phantom of the Opera. After that we played pool and had drinks at an uppity pool hall. 10 years later, she stuck with me, so I proposed.
Mind you I bought the tickets way in advance with the quest that I meet someone to either 1. get laid 2. find a nice girl who would appreciate it. I lucked out.
I'd still do the architecture tour. My firm did the conoid glass wall at the rear of the U.S. Federal Courthouse in downtown boston (100 ft high 400 ft wide). That thing is nice but you can only see if from behind the building which is essentially in the water. I know that Boston has an architecture tour from the water (believe it or not) and you could see a lot more things like that. It's entirely unconventional, but fresh in my opinion.
If you can cook ok, having her come over and cooking dinner together works great. Make some martinis or drink some wine and take you time cooking.... if its a good match you will know
****Warning**** if you place is not clean and tidy...do not attempt

I think it's more about the place you chose, not what you chose. Dinner doesn't have to cliche if you chose a great place. And that doesn't have to mean expensive. It can, but doesn't have to. Is there a cool live Jazz place near. That's always a blast. Normally a cool sit down atmosphere and people aren't into everyone's shit. If you wanted to do something sporty, I would go bowling instead of ice skating. Still probably a later date idea just to have fun, not to get to know someone. The idea on a first date is talk and feel out the situation and chemistry. I have huge opposition to the movie idea on an early date. Too much dead time with no conversation. Nothing gets accomplished. I know there's some bad ass Museums up there. Do any of them have a cool cafe in them or anything? That's always kind of low pressure and relaxing. Is there a drive in movie theater? At least that's something different and you still have the potentiol to talk since you're secluded from every one else. Basically just do what you would normally do, don't sell her something she's not going to get forever. I think that's the problem with a lot of people in the courtship stage. Just do what you enjoy, and if she enjoys it and things happen then you know she likes what you like, not what you're trying to dream up.
