ok, im going to compare this weed argument with prostitution. i know i am setting myself up for a hell of a bashing... ah well here it goes
Prostitution is A MAJOR business in the United States. perhaps just as big as the weed-market is, except that the weed-market is controlled by a smaller amount of people in comparison to prostitution.
now my argument is this... SINCE prostitution has been going on for years, just like people smoking weed has... SINCE prostitution will forever be an occurence, like people smoking weed is... SINCE taxing prostitution would result in HUGE numbers for the US, just like taxing weed would be... why dont we go ahead and legalize prostitution as well?? shit, you know the amount of men that will be lined up to bang for money as soon as prostitution would become legal?!?!??! the profit would be GLORRRIOUUSSS. the arguments are EXACTLY the same. prostitution will NEVER end, the profits would be equally as big, and really, the risk of obtaining an STD is about the same as becoming a drug addict.
so what do you guys say now? if we legalize weed, prostitution would have to come attatched as well.
This argument is ridiculous and flawed for one very basic reason. Prostitution does not cost us nearly as much as enforcing our current marijuana laws, excluding all other drugs as well.
The arguments of prostitution and marijuana are not exactly the same as you claim.
The number of people who contract an STD is half that of people who have tried marijuana. You obviously did not base your statement on facts. Please look in the statistics category.http://www.coolnurse.com/std2.htm
Just for the record both mariuana and prostitution are legal in certain states/cities in America.
Alchohol IS more addictive and harmful than marijuana.
If you would like to debate prostitution we should start another thread. It does make for an interesting debate in the world of "victimless" crimes.

Where? Obviously prostitution is legal in Nevada in ranches way outside Las Vegas and really close to Reno, but where is marijuna LEGAL. Not Amsterdam legal, and it's barely tolerated for AIDS patients.

Alaska. Currently it is legal to possess up to 4 ounces for personal use. The Governor is introducing legislation to have that amount dropped to 1 ounce currently. Here is the link covering that story http://www.cannabisnews.com/news/thread21369.shtml
At the bottom there is some commentary and another link to where the article was originally printed.
Technically the city and county of Denver did legalize a small amount for personal use but I'm not gonna get into that debacle as the state still considers it illegal.

Even though I agree with legalizing prostitution as well, I think more people of tolerant of legalizing weed rather than legalizing prostitution. Shit, it's bad enough if my girlfriend finds out I went to a strip joint, she'd probably shoot me if I even set foot in a brothel even if I just had a drink.
Despite prostitution being the oldest trade in the business, and the fact that if it were legalized and controlled like Nevada where they practice safe sex and the employees are regularly tested for AIDS and other STD's, you still have those puritan communities that would never allow such a vice to be legal. Religious women would go nuts. Everybody would start crying "think about the children" blah blah blah. Any politician that lobbies for its legalization could risk losing their female and perhaps male voting bloc.
Moreover, Marijuana can be harvested as JL mentioned, assist farmers across the nation, heavily taxed like cigarettes and have spokesmen like Willie Nelson who give Marijuana credibility. Also, since marijuana would be legalized, Hemp could then be legalized and thereby creating another crop that can be harvested and put to good agricultural use.

try rephrasing this statement. i didnt quite understand what you were saying.
The arguments of prostitution and marijuana are not exactly the same as you claim.
OH REALLY THEY'RE NOT???? give me a fucking break man, i've established that the gains WOULD ALSO BE HUGE due to taxes, like the YOUR marijuana argument. prostitution will NEVER end, just like marijuana usage wont either, YOUR ARGUMENT AGAIN. so how the fuck are they different. dont just put out a statement and not even try to back it up with your reasoning.
The number of people who contract an STD is half that of people who have tried marijuana. You obviously did not base your statement on facts. Please look in the statistics category.http://www.coolnurse.com/std2.htm
no i didnt base it on facts, isnt that clear? but there could be measures in order to prevent the spread of STD's, IF prostitution was to be legalized. a similar technique could be used to that of the porn industries.
Just for the record both mariuana and prostitution are legal in certain states/cities in America.
you named alaska. where are the other stateS you claim? denver doesnt count.

thank for this piece of random, and useless information

sorry, but this will be the last post i make in quite some time. i also got better things to do than argue with a former stoner about legalizing marijuana

Good. It's probably in your best interest anyway. I think the people who've followed this thread have made up their minds by now.
Weed and prostitution, if properly regulated and taxed, should be legal. I've never heard a good argument as to why they shouldn't. The biggest opposition comes from the religious right deciding that because it goes against their morals, it should be illegal for everyone which is not how we should be making laws.
Glad this thread stimulated some good conversation and debate. That's what this forum is for (TOT that is). Listening to viewpoints totally opposite of what yours may be is a part of your personal enlightenment, even if you do not agree. Articulating your point of view may reinforce it or may help you find the pitfalls.
Cool. I'm glad some people followed this thread. These laws are perplexing to say the least as our government sends a mixed message regarding these issues.
