Update-

Titan - Drives nice, nice bed size, excellent towing capacity, crappy mileage.

Frontier - Drives great, tiny bed, good towing capacity, ok mileage.

Tundra - Drives nice, good bed size, barely enough towing capacity, ok mileage.

Tacoma - Drives excellent, decent bed size, totally insufficient towing capacity, good mileage.

The Tundra seems to be the best compromise at the moment, but the jury is still out. The Frontier needs a longer wheelbase.

I've also been checking out the GMC Sierra 1500. Specs seem reasonable and there is a massive rebate available. I'm going to go and drive one this weekend.

GMC's have a good reputation, and I know a few people who have them and swear by them.

After further review...

I found out that the towing numbers for the Toyotas were off. The numbers that I had were for the trucks without the towing packages. The real numbers make more sense. So the Tundra would appear to be back in the lead. The Tacoma would actually be in the lead if it wasn't for the fact that I can get a comparably equipped Tundra cheaper right now. Go figure.

Really, Tundras are going for less than Tacomas. Interesting...

Are you Serious?... that's odd.

Did you say you were looking for a 4x4... or just a 2WD truck?

I was finding that used Tundras in a 4x4 were going for about $5-10K more than the same year Tacoma with similar milleage and options... at least within about a 100 mile radius of the area that I live in.

Example... I got my 2001 Tacoma 4x4 5-speed with 60K miles for 11 grand. Most of the listings for a Tundra V6 4x4 5-speed were in the $16-22K range where I live. I'd say the average asking price for these Tundras was about $17K. That's on Autotrader and in local vehicle sales magazines(Want-Ad and autohunter). The local used car lots were asking a real real lot more.

I am looking for a 4x2 and I'm talking new. Used is probably a whole different story like you said.

There is a $1750 rebate on Tundras until Dec. 5 according to Carsdirect, but no rebate on the Tacomas.

That means (at least at the dealer down here) that I can get a Tundra for about $1500 under invoice while the Tacomas were running about $1500 over invoice.

For those interested I finally decided on the Tundra. A white fully loaded SR5 double cab. The $2500 rebate made me do it. Got it for $28000 out the door which in my book is a pretty good deal considering invoice on it was $28800.

Also for those further interested I didn't take the promotion. It was made apparent to me that a more lucrative future for me (in both advancement opportunities and monetarily) lies where I currently am.

Why not a Titan? Keep it in the Nissan family.

A few reasons.

The mileage sucks. The Tundra has a better residual value. The Tundra has a better reliability history according to to Consumer Reports and my friend Jimbo (a Nissan service writer). And last but not least you can get the Tundra with a moon roof.

Overall after weighing all of the options the Tundra seemed to be the best compromise out of all of the trucks that I checked out.
