Head coach Andy Reid announced Monday afternoon in a statement that wide receiver Terrell Owens has been suspended four games for conduct detrimental to the team and will not return even after that suspension is over.
Reid said in a statement: "Terrell Owens has been suspended by the team for four games for conduct detrimental to the team.
Reid said that Owens had every chance to make amends
"He will not return to play for the team even after the conclusion of that suspension. The league has been notified by the player's union that they will be grieving a right to take that action.
"Therefore, there is nothing more I can say at this point."
Owens was suspended by the team for Sunday night's game against Washington after he lashed out at Eagles management and quarterback Donovan McNabb during an interview with ESPN last week.
Reid made it clear that the suspension was not solely based on last week's actions.
"This decision is a result of a large number of situations that have accumuated over a long period of time in which Terrell had been warned repeatedly about the consequences of his actions," said Reid. "Even with the activities that took place last week, we gave Terrell every opportunity to avoid this outcome."
Reid added that he is working with Vice President of Player Personnel Tom Heckert on potentially signing another wide receiver.
Owens had 47 receptions for 763 yards and six touchdowns this season. Greg Lewis will take over as the No. 1 receiver and Reggie Brown will be the other starting wide receiver.
Throughout the course of his press conference, Reid declined answering more questions about Owens, saying he wanted to stay away from saying more because of both legal ramifcations and personal interest in talking about the situation.
However, Reid said that, contrary to some reports, there was not a thumbs-up/thumbs-down vote on Owens.
"I don't want to bring the players into this," he said. "This is my decision here."
Said Reid about the atmosphere he would like to have for the remainder of the season within the team: "I truly believe that this is a team sport and I have said that to you before. I expect the guys to play together and support each other, which I thought we took a step forward in yesterday (Sunday night). I would expect that to continue to improve throughout the remainder of the season."
Reid said that, despite the loss to the Redskins, he felt the team displayed a better attitude, a positive he took from the tough loss.
"I thought we played a little better as a team," said Reid. "I thought it was a better atmosphere."
I think it's great that the asshole doesn't get to play the rest of the year...
Just think of how much that will kill him, as his career statistics are put on hold for half a seasons worth of stats.... and I'm sure the guy will be losing a tremendous amount of PR ratings and won't exactly be hauling in anywhere near as many endorsement ads.

I say that they should pair him up with 50 cent and give them the Asshole of the Year award for 2005
and thanks to Partyman...I've been given the update on what the deal is all about...athought... he initially lied to me!
partyman66: well.... you know the eagles QB, Donovan Mcnabb?
Princess: k
partyman66: T.O had an affair with his sister
partyman66: turns out he did it just to get Mcnabb back for a fight they had this year
Princess: wtf? was his sister married?
partyman66: yeah she got divorced to be wtih TO supposedly
partyman66: but then he ditched her
partyman66: and apparently she has Herpes now, pretty crazy huh?
Princess: lol- drama!
partyman66: well it doesn't end there
Princess: so what else?
partyman66: then he payed off some thugs to take teh blame for it, to protect his image in the media
partyman66: and he hooked up with his OTHER sister, in the meantime!!!
Princess: omg- lol
Princess: that's so lame
partyman66: OMG is right
partyman66: you know why?
partyman66: cus I can't believe you believed that story!
partyman66:
partyman66: hahahahaahahahah
Princess: you fucken ass
partyman66: hahahaa
Princess: you're fucked up!!!
Malida Aliya: i hate you
partyman66: wow... that was great!
partyman66: haha
yeah that's right. i picked "other" i mean i had to, my name was in it. LOL
but anyway... they should have 'contained' him much earlier. oo and mayb elistened to what he was saying. that too.
they knew what they were dealing with when they signed him, how can they pretend everything should be perfect?
in all honesty, i don't have the perfect answer. but i do know that on the field him and McNabb were amazing (when McNabb remembered how to throw the ball) all of the problems were off field. they will not find anothr receiver like TO. maybe they should have payed him. i mean i could argue that all day, but that's different. long story short - they should have payed him.
TO was great he just needed a little coaching, after all that's what coaches are for, right?
at this point in time, i kind of do think that they made the right decision. it is just a shame.

I don't think paying him more would have made any difference. Maybe postponed this outburst until next season when he wanted to restructure his contract again The guy is not a professional and he was lucky the Eagles helped get him out of the Ravens deal. Over the past two years he has not been a very durable receiver either.
I would like to see how T.O would react to being put into a Bill Parcells system.
Seems like most other coaches can't handle him, but Parcells has a nack for being able to contain these type of players when they reach the later stages of their troublesome careers. Look at him now, he's got both Terry Glenn and Keyshawn Johnson as his 2 WR's. Prime examples, right there... even play the same position. The big thing about T.O though is that he's much better than Keyshawn or Glenn and he is also like twice as cocky and arrogant.... and hasn't really experienced any significant dropoff in on-the-field performance like Glenn and Keyshawn did before they cleaned up their act.
It would be an interesting thing to watch and see how things worked out with Parcells and T.O coexisting on the same team.

It was only like yesterday when McNabb would just chuck the ball 40yrds down the field and TO would be there for the catch and run another 40yrds for a TD. The good old days...
T.O is about to singlehandedly ruin his own career by closing off all options for success due to his own arrogance.... kinda reminds me of what Clarett did in Denver(only Clarett sucks ).

They should never have dealt with him in the first place. Unfortunately everone in professional sports (and major colleges) are willing to sell their souls for one shot at success.

I don't know, I thought picking him up from San Fransisco was a risk worth taking. He had been with that organization for a while and didn't casue nearly as many problems as he has in Philly in such a short time. The quarterback situation there was shaky to say the least and the organization was clearly rebuilding. Giving him a fresh start with a winning organization can have a way of miraculously change a persons attitude. Of course in hindsight it didn't in TOs case though.

but isn't that what it's all about?
No.
In professional golf, etiquette, honor, and history still rule. People who are truly students of the game realize this. In no other sport in the world does honor rule more. In no other sport do people routinely call penalties on themselves. Rules officials are there to assist players in determining the rules, while the players are responsible for adhering to them.
Unfortunately in other major sports it’s a win at all costs attitude and one that has cropped up in, of all things, the Little League championships. It’s sad, but this is what the parents are passing along to their kids and what we back when we don’t punish people like TO.
TO is a jackass and one who should be punished for his actions, not praised or rewarded.
