Default More crooked politics in Hawaii

Here's the link to the article:
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/ap...509280359/1001

Here's the cliff notes:
Democrat in the local legislature needs to be replaced and it is the Governor's responsibility. She appoints Harbin. Harbin has a less than stellar past and has a reported current state tax debt of approximately $125,000. The state's investigation of her past is so shitty that they don't turn anything up.

I especially like this little excerpt from the article;
"But she said she did not realize her past would be so exposed by the appointment and that she believes other Democrats have treated her badly. She said she might consider becoming an independent, which would likely force the House leadership to rule on her credentials, since being a Democrat was a requirement for the appointment.

Harbin said she even might entertain resigning if every other lawmaker who ever had a tax debt or a misdemeanor conviction agreed to resign with her. Her contribution, she said, could be "the Bev bar" — a new standard for what is considered the acceptable background for someone in public office."

Didn't realize that her appointment would result in exposure of her past?

Come on who the hell does she think will actually believe that? I might have been born at night.............but it wasn't last night!

I also like the implication that a bunch of the other legislators might be in situations similar to hers. The fact that there isn't a general outcry from the legislators at this time makes me think she's hit a sore spot.

Summary: Hawaii politics are moronic and still have that twinge of corruption despite the new administration.

I would venture to guess that she is among plenty others who have questionable legal standings, both civil and criminal.

The thing that's really disturbing is after getting caught, she still doesn't want to resign.

That seems to be a general trend. Can anyone say DeLay?

I was just reading a little bit about him today. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of money the guys in DC are exposed to.

I wonder how many politicians and corporate heads are praying that no one looks into their backgrounds...

it's sad that there are so many scandals coming out right now...but it kind of makes you wonder how many have already gotten away with it.

You are missing one important point here. There is NO question of her guilt, she was proven guilty and now she's a convicted tax cheat. As nasty as it sounds, DeLay's indictment is only an allegation until proven. It will be interesting to see how this plays out, if there is any real meat to the allegations. I'll admit I am somewhat skeptical because there is a looong history of animosity against DeLay by this prosecutor... to the point even the media has used the word 'vendetta'. And it sounds like this guy has his own closet full of skeletons, read on if you want...

National Review Online

"Dollars for Dismissals"

The prosecutor in the DeLay case dropped charges in exchange for cash to pet cause.

Yeah it's not exactly an apples to apples comparison but I smell something fishy none the less. What I found peculiar about an article I read yestereday was the process in which he stepped down from head chairman (still holds office but not the house leader?) Anyhow, there was a law put in effect that the chairman must temporarily step down if indicted. DeLay and some republicans (I'm not a dem or a repub so this is NOT meant to lay blame on one party or the other) got this repealed so that you did not have to step down. Only after some heat was coming his way, they later changed back to the original legislation because of what the voters might think. All this ocurred in a somewhat shorter time frame.

I think the difference between the situation in Hawaii and DeLay is that he hasn't officially gotten his hand caught in the cookie jar and may not as he seems to have more power and influence among his peers. And make no doubt about it, the prosecutor does have some political motivation which could cloud judgement just enough.

My mom sent me an email that was sort of a riddle. It was a list of crimes ranging from criminal to civil. Violent crimes and DUI's to tax fraud. Listed one after another and the amount of cases there were for each infraction. The objective was to guess which group of people this lengthy rap sheet belonged to....

It was the backgrounds of people in Congress or the house of representatives (can't remember which since it was a while ago)

I know, I know, you can't believe everything you read which I practice but even if only half of the stuff was accurate

Right or Left- I don't trust either.
