Hey everyone. Put on the news stations. There is a Jetblue plane whose landing gear is not functioning properly and it is getting ready to land in LAX. It's on most of the news channels.
JetBlue Flight to Attempt 'Soft Landing' After Landing Gear Jams
Wednesday, September 21, 2005
LOS ANGELES — A JetBlue (search) airliner with landing gear problems circled the Los Angeles area for more than two hours Wednesday as the pilots dumped fuel over the ocean and officials tried to determine how to make an emergency landing.
The pilots discovered the plane's front wheels were turned sideways and stuck as they tried to retract the gear shortly after takeoff.
The back landing gear was also down as the plane circled, but it appeared to be in the correct position. Officials planned to try to land the aircraft, relying on the back wheels, at Los Angeles International Airport (search), which has longer runways than surrounding airports and more emergency equipment.
JetBlue Flight 292 left Burbank's Bob Hope Airport at 3:17 p.m. with 139 passengers headed for New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport, said airline spokesman Bryan Baldwin.
Federal Aviation Administration (search) spokesman Donn Walker said the Airbus A320 was dumping fuel over the Pacific to lighten the plane for an emergency landing.
"After leaving Burbank, pilots reported a landing gear indication light on, meaning there may be a problem or issue with the landing gear," Baldwin said. He said the crew decided to head for a nearby airport to attempt to land.
Now that's a bummer. It is possible to land those, and assuming they burn all the fuel and the pilot is good, the odds are in their favor. I am literally 10 minutes away from LAX so I'm sure I'll hear some commotion.
by the way... wats up cK havent seen u in a while. classes driving you crazy yet? hang in there buddy, it's for the best
Thanks for your support, Smoke Things are going okay. Work has been pretty stressful lately and the combination of the schoolwork and my chronic procrastination makes my weekends suck (class is Monday night). I'll be fine, it's just going to take a little reprioritization of my work/life/school/6mt balance.

In the grand scheme of things, and not negating the seriousness of the situation, a cocked nosewheel isn't the worst thing that can happen to you. If it failed to extend, that's when the "pucker factor" starts to skyrocket. But as you saw, the biggest worry is sparks/fire in which case the nosewheel isn't near any fuel lines and you are going to have crash crews lined up along the runway to put out the fire within seconds of bringing it to a stop. There is a risk of the gear collapsing, but as long as you have good "down and locked" indications you should be okay.
That being said, the pilot did an AWESOME job. I don't know if anyone else noticed, but even with the nosewheel cocked 90 degrees, it was still tracking right on top of the centerline markings the whole way. It looked like a nice, smooth, min rate of descent landing with a pillow-soft touchdown. BZ to the flight crew.
