Default The random/obscure music thread

Seeing as we have a pretty broad cross-section of the population in this forum, I thought it might be interesting to see what kind of "music from the fringes" we might be able to bring to the masses (or at least as much of the masses that are 6mt'ers). My musical tastes are as broad as anyone I've ever met, but I'm always interested in find other little nuggets of awesomeness. Here are my first two contributions:

Matisyahu- He's a hasidic Jewish reggae singer. Some of you may have heard of him as he is gaining popularity. The Jewish/reggae thing may not seem like they go together, but he's actually pretty good. I recommend his live album "Live at Stubbs". For those of you who don't like illegal music downloading (I personally have zero guilt about it) and maybe can't find him on iTunes or whatever service you use his website is www.hasidicreggeae.com.

Shonen Knife- This a Japanese all-girl rock/punk band. Similar to the 5678's who were featured in the first Kill Bill. It's silly, it's fun, and sooooo Japanese. A lot of their songs are in English and they do a lot of covers too from "Suzy was a Headbanger" by the Ramones, to "On top of the World" by the Carpenters, to "Daydream Believer" by the Monkees". Classic stuff. This is the link to the album on Amazon.com that I first heard. "Cookie Day" is the song that made me fall in love with it. Engrish at it's best:

Sugar, sugar candy in my mouth
Stay home watch TV
A cute boy singer is singing like a man
I have nothing to do

It's very very hot outside
I'm lazy in my room
I have to water the cactus on the porch
'cuz it needs a drink

Thinking about these kinds of things
I suddenly wanted to eat
Some cookies and dip them in milk
I wanna go to the cookie shop!

Cookie Day! Cookie Day!
It's a beautiful Cookie Day!
Cookie Day! Cookie Day!
It's a beautiful Cookie Day!

I have a postcard of a big buffalo
I bought it during the tour
I missed the chance to send it to you
Back in North Dakota

There are many pretty things in life
Take it easy, let it be
I promise to send it next time to you
Really means a lot to me.

Thinking about these kinds of things
I suddenly wanted to eat
Some cookies and dip them in milk
I wanna go to the cookie shop!

Cookie Day! Cookie Day!
It's a beautiful Cookie Day!
Cookie Day! Cookie Day!
It's a beautiful Cookie Day!

So what do you have to suggest?

It gets better:

Flying Jelly Attack
I'm gonna eat jelly jelly jelly jelly
Jelly jelly jelly jelly beans
You're gonna eat cherry cherry cherry cherry
Cherry cherry cherry cherry drops
I'm gonna eat jelly jelly jelly jelly
Jelly jelly jelly jelly beans
You're gonna eat cherry cherry cherry cherry
Cherry cherry cherry cherry drops

Ooh, flying jelly beans, throwing them to you
Ooh, crashing cherry drops, breaking right in two

When it gets dangerous
Call out of a rescue
Somebody might hear you calling
And come to help you soon

Ooh they crash into each other, jelly beans
Eating them and throwing them forever cherry drops

Oooh. I like this thread.

Here's one band. Cigar Store Indians. They played a free concert at the library one night. Really good live band. They were a lot of fun. If they come to your city I highly suggest that you check them out. They play a alt-country/bluegrass/rock-n-roll style.

SWEET! I LOVE this genre(s) of music! I can give you a TON of bands in this style: Sun Volt, Uncle Tupelo, The Yayhoos, The Bottle Rockets, Mofro, Will Hoge, the Jayhawks, Wilco, Todd Snyder, Virginia Coalition

....and that's just off the top of my head.

Jayhawks in my CD changer in the G right now...

BLUE

where have all my friends gone
they've all disappeared
turned around maybe one day
you're all that was there
stood by on believing
stood by on my own
always thought I was someone
turned out I was wrong

but you brought me through
and you made me feel so blue
why don't you stay behind?
so blue
why don't you stop
and look at what's going down?

lived by an old woman
she'd never sell me a lie
it's hard to sing with someone
who won't sing with you
give all of my mercy
give all of my heart
never thought that I'd miss you
that I'd miss you so much

and you brought me through
and you made me feel so blue
why don't you stay behind?
so blue
why don't you stop
and look at what's going down?

all my life (staying while)
I'm waiting for (staying while)
someone I could (waiting around)
show the door (now that I'm blue)
but nothing seems to change
(that I'm blue from now on)
till you come back home

so blue
why don't you stay behind?
so blue
why don't you?
why don't you stay behind?
so blue
why don't you?
why dont' you stay behind?
so blue
why don't you stop
and look at what's down?

Great Song! "Save it for a Rainy Day" is good too.

Anybody listening to Shooter Jennings, Waylon's son? "4th of July" is a great song! The whole CD is good, really.

My more esoteric music tends to gravitate towards stuff not in English, like the Gypsy Kings:

No te encuentro a l'abandon
Es imposible no te encuentro de vardad
Por eso un dia no cuento si de nada
Lo mismo que ayer
Yo pienso en ti

There's also a band I grew up with that apparently still plays a lot called Dread Zepplin.....Led Zepplin music played in the Reggae style, sung by a buy who dresses like Elvis.....what's not to like about that???

Not too sure how obscure they are but The Pogues are a really good Irish band. They play a sort of folk punk.

And along that same line and more obscure I think would be The Dropkick Murphys. They play a Scottish folk punk. Their latest CD is really good. It's called The Warrior's Code.

Morcheeba

Otherwise:

They wanted me here
Just to show you my face
But when it comes to the crunch
I just hide in disgrace
You're calling me mad
But I know you're the same
Cause you got to be seen to be playing the game
Yes we got to be seen to be playing, the game

It ain't gonna hurt now
If you open up your eyes
You're making it worse now
Everytime you criticise
I'm under your curse now
But I call it compromise
I thought that you were wise
But you were otherwise

A specimen like you
I would love to obtain
I asked a tedious guy if he'll tell me your name
I'd love to impress you
With a back somersault
I want to take out your love
But it's locked in a vault
I wanna take up your love
But it's locked in a vault

It ain't gonna hurt now
If you open up your eyes
You're making it worse now
Everytime you criticise
I'm under your curse now
But I call it compromise
I thought that you were wise
But you were otherwise

When i open my mouth
I'm so brutally honest
And i can't expect that kind of love from you
When you open your mouth
your teeth are beautifully polished
And i can't extract the pain you're going through
No i can't explain
The pain you're going through

It ain't gonna hurt now
If you open up your eyes
You're making it worse now
Everytime you womanise
I'm under your curse now
But I call it compromise
I'm under your curse

It ain't gonna hurt now
If you open up your eyes
You're making it worse now
Everytime you criticise
I'm under your curse now
But they call it compromise
I thought that you were wise
But you were otherwise
