It's actually Mt. St. Helens.

That may be the purest truth anybody has written on this site...ever. Anybody that thinks that politicians care more about the common man than keeping their position of power and greed is thinking exactly like they want us to think. Sure there are some (Mcain comes to mind) that do care but when it comes down to choosing between the people and power they still follow the path of power.

It makes me sick to my stomach to think that the two best people that our country could come up with for President were Bush and Kerry.

My concern with this report is the lack of information on the steps the local government took before and after the hurricane. Why is the focus on the Federal Government when it's clearly the responsibility of the local (Mayor) and state (Governer) to establish and implement emergency plans before the arrival of a hurricane. I am talking years in advance.

Have these same officials implemented a tidal wave emergency response plan?

In general I think the elected officials of Hawaii are bozos, but the persons in NO are of a whole different category. Lay the blame at their feet before dishing it out to the Fed because this starts at the local level.
I agree that before the storm the local government screwed up. I'm talking about FEMA's response (or lack thereof) after the storm. I think the top dogs should lose their jobs and be replaced with people that actually have some experience with federal emergencies. And I'm tired of hearing now is not the time to talk about it. I live in South Florida. We're right in the middle of hurricane season. It would be slighly more comforting knowing that action is being taked now to make improvements to FEMA.

I just read those numbers which had better not fucking be true and now I am really crying hard. I think I'll go back to sleep or go out and buy a pack and smoke a cigarette. I feel at this moment like I don't think I am going to bother to get out of bed for a month. I actually think that I am going to throw up. Our little company raised 5K in a just a couple of days which cheered a few people up at least to think they are helping. It has been hard seeing the images and I had to stop yesterday when I heard the estimate that ten thousand could have been killed...I thought I was going to be able to just stay in anger land and not deal with this tragedy considering my workplace was full of defensive republicans bonding with each other this past week because their cherished administration is looking bad and after about ten minutes you know I jumped in, the energy was very painful...but now that the numbers of dead are starting to roll in...it has really sunk into me so deeply that I don't think I can get any sort of anger up enough to get through the week at work...I have pretty much hit the bottom of low and sadness...I think it just took a second and much higher number possibility...the idea that FEMA would be prepared in one way...with 33,000 body bags...

OK, I just threw up...time to go get that cigarette...

I just have to add my second to this. If there is anything I've learned in this world, it's that as much as people are different, they are all the same. We all want the same basic things, are influenced by the same basic events in the same basic ways. It's our "blindness" that doesn't allow us to see that we're all one people.

What bothers me more about this is that most of those people died *after* the storm, some by result of a bad choice (stay at home) or planning, others by result of the poor emergency management reaction.

(sorry, i'm sour)
That is the problem with the government. They try to make us become its slaves, feeding its' coffers with our tax dollars. The more they make us depend on them the stronger they get.

agreed.

Mount Rainier is considered an active volcano and many believe that it will erupt in the near future, hopefully not in an explosive way as St. Helens did, but we gotta remember that it hasn't released any of the geothermal pressure under it like St. Helens does continuously.
Of course, St. Helens may erupt again but, golly gee, most people learned from it the first time and there aren't a whole lot of homes built on the mountainside.

Once again I am going to try and not take a defensive position. I am certain that mistakes were made at all levels of the government and I too hope that eventually heads will roll as a result of it. Bush has ordered investigations into it and I hope in the end he will follow the results of the investigations and hold those accountable that need to be held accountable. But by your own concern that we are right in the middle of hurricane season, do you think completely shaking up FEMA by firing its existing command structure will help make it MORE responsive? I don't. These people know that their mistakes cost lives. There is nothing that will motivate them to improve their performance more than having that over their heads.

if you live in south florida, then you more than anyone else should know how faulty predicting where a storm could strike truly is. therefore, you do like the rest of us, and LEAVE! do not wait on the government to come breast feed you.

Because most of them didn't have a means to leave the city. You act like everybody has their own private jet to scoot out whenever a storm is brewing.
