Default Back to school after 10 years

Well, I'm finally going back to school after 10 years. I'm excited, but a little apprehensive since it has been such a long time since I earned my bachelor's degree. I really should have gone back sooner, but it was hard to get motivated after enjoying my free time for so long. I am entering into an accelerated MBA program and should be finished in around 2 years.

Did any of you go back to school after taking a number of years off?

hey good luck man!

you're a brave one, and you have my respect my gf's mother is planning on going back to school, but she never earned a bachelor's, she stopped after her associates. she's in her late 30's, and i dont understand why she is doing this... but oh well, best of luck to you both!

Thanks dude. I can't fault your gf's mother for going back for her bachelor's degree. It's a major accomplishment and can open a lot of doors for her or others. These days, a bachelor's degree is the minimum requirement for professional positions in many companies. For me, I would like to have some other options above what my bachelor's will get me (whatever that might be).

Hey CK...good luck man...I went and got my MBA......got it 16 years after my Bachelors degree

If there's one thing I would have done differently had I to do it all over again, its that I would've done this sooner in life, but I got it done, all on my own.....and I have to say I'm damn proud of myself (athank you very much )

Hell no. I always hated being the poor student and I really don't have enough time to sufficiently dedicate to getting another degree.

I have been thinking about getting my PE though. Again it's really tough to bite the bullet and make the time. If not for work it wouldn't be an issue.

Good luck on the MBA program ck (which school by the way?).

Thanks GZ. It's a small local university called Holy Family. It's nice and convenient to my home, which was a major criterion for me.

PE? What does the acronym stand for? If I remember correctly, you don't particularly care for your job, where do you see yourself in 5-10 years?

PE = professional engineer. I don't necessarily hate the job, just the amount of hours. It's to the point that if I'm home with daylight I don't know what to do.

The last company I worked for didn't give a rat's ass whether you got your P.E. or not. They had some of the best engineers I've ever worked with.

The company I'm at now makes a huge deal out of getting your E.I. and P.E. when they should be worried about the quality of their engineers. Not what titles they have.

I work in an education service center and its not uncommon to see folks in their 50's start working on their doctorate later in life. Glad to hear your going back to school because IMO it is never to late.

I think it's great. And I agree, commit to it now while you feel you can invest the time. In my case, marriage, kids, business ownership, etc., all contribute to more than a simple excuse to claim lack of time. It's almost impossible to do if at the expense of one's already too short family time.

CK, got me a BS in Business Administration and an MBA in Finance. Honestly, I don't think the MBA did a whole lot for my career but part of that is my own fault...I took a bit of a career change while studying for my degree. The reason I went to get it was to futher my old career....but, I"m still glad I did it.

I was thinking about going there for my MSIS cuz they offer a couple classes here at my work, but right now I hate my job and don't plan to stay in the IT industry and I'm too lazy to get it. Are you going to the one by Franklin Mills???

Well, I'm gonig to try to get out of the air force and start working for my uncle. He owns a wholesale distrubuting company and I will start as a janitor. Then after I work hard work up to management and eventually run the company with my cousin. Geez, I can't believe I'm going to go from flying jets to cleaning the toilet but fook it I'll go down a step to make real money in the future. Anyway, the point I'm trying to make is I was going to go back to school for a MBA but I'd rather go and work and get experience and see how the real businesses work.

I went back for my MBA only about 3 years after I got my undergrad degree so I can't help you much there... but i'm glad I did it.

..but I also can't wait to be finished. Just a couple months left! *crosses fingers*
