Did it sound like he threw a rod? He probably should have taken it out of gear and coasted down. In any case his roll cage was his best friend that day.
Edit: Moral of the story, from a racer's point of view, if you're going to drive that fast have the proper safety equipment.
Makes me think twice about going out to Spring Mountain Motorsports Ranch next week.

did he pull the wheel to the side in order to brake?!?!
It seemed to me that he unsuccessfully tried to correct his path. He was engine braking, so he probably wouldn't pull his wheel to the side to aid in slowing down (unless he was a real dipshit )
INTERPRETER! That was pretty crazy. Looked to me like he should have just let the car coast to a more managable speed before pulling off.....hard to know though. Pretty amazing video though.
On a side note, did anyone else see the Monster Garage a couple of weeks ago where they took a old Lincoln (I think.....72 or something like that, probably had the suicide doors, don't remember tho), shortened it up by about 18 inches and dropped it on a NASCAR chassis with a NASCAR engine? They ran it out there at the desert run and got a pretty decent speed out of it. seems to me they had some kind of engine problem with that one too. kinda cool. I wish my memory was better

he was breaking w/ the gears, but i dont think he tried to correct his path because he wouldnt have jerked like that. i honestly wish i knew wtf he was thinking!
I've seen this one before, and what happened was that the front tire blew. The video of this I saw showed a nice angle from outside the car from the chopper, and the driver's side front tire just came apart. What you hear is a combination of him trying to downshift to engine brake, and the rubber flying off the tire hitting the inside of the fender until it's all metal rim on the pavement. Once that happened, it was pretty much toast, and went where the car threw him.
