What's up DDS!

I bought a 42" HD Plasma a couple of months ago. It's a Vizio (which you've probably never heard of), but I got it at Costco for $1,900!!!! It is the steal of the year and now retails for probably $2,200 or so, still a good price. An awesome picture (on digital sources, particularly HD material....which is about the only thing I watch any more, but not so good on analog stuff, but this is commone with HDTV's....EDTV's do much better with analog). Picture with DVD's is good too although I'm now considering buying and HD upconverting player to take better advantage of the TV's capabilities. I'm VERY happy with my set and figure that, because it was so inexpensive, I can move it to the bedroom in a few years with when price on 50's comes down.

Pioneer is a good brand too, just priced like most other known brands, ie very high. I didn't mind going with a no name because the sets are assembled right here Costa Mesa and Costco has an unbeatable return policy. They make a 50" but I recall it wasn't as well received as its 42 HD brother.

Best place to do your research is www.avsforum.com there's an entire forum dedicated to Plasmas and one mother F*ing long thread on the Vizio if you're interested.

thanks...the 50" pioneer at costco is no longer available. they are carrying the 50" jvc instead. i'm not too fond of jvc's. i'm definitely not going with edtv. i have hd cable and it looks great on my regular hd sony wega.

Panasonic models are best rated and not that expensive, I bought my 42" a year ago and very happy with it.

what type of display? CRT?

plasma will never match CRT.

BUT Fujitsu makes some nice stuff --- some of the newer Hitachi's are decent - but overall, plasma is one of the worst displays out there...

read reviews on vsforum.com and plasmatvbuyingguide.com, panasonic is way better than fujitsu and hitachi, they keep winning awards year after year.

well i'm sure you know this, but i'll mention it anyways.

plasma tv's are only suppose to last somewhere around 5 years or so. that's a lot of money for a short life.

bad myth - not always true... unless you watch 24/7

the life exp of these sets is not much shorter than other displays.
plus in 5+ years there will be better and more affordable tvs available.

wrong....if you had the plasma on for 8 hours a day...in ten years, the tv will be half as bright...meaning the half life is ten years. duh.

ok first and formost. you would be easy to "sell"
you gave me a link to Panasonics website. you think it will say they are bad?? F awards. F Consumer Reports - they don't know anything. it's all about the $$ and who pays the most - for who gets the best reviews.
GO LOOK AT THE SETS WITH YOUR OWN EYES.

second. the second link. is a 37" plasma. anyone that buys a 37" plasma is a fool --- you can buy a 37" lcd direct view that is WAY better than any plasma.

sorry to "call you out" but you obviously do not know much about video displays.
and i need to apologize already for having an attitude -- but i hate to see when marketing has gotten to someone so badly.

i'm not sure what you meant by "back projection" i am assuming "rear projection" (consumer type box projection set)
or "front projection" (like what is in a movie theater)

either way - both displays are eons above plasma. plasma cannot come close to reaching the black levels of a CRT (direct or projection)
a GOOD CRT front projection is one of the best pictures you will see. bar none.
there are many good rear projection models out there ( higher end Hitachi, Toshiba, Mits, Pioneer Elite - which is really Hitachi) that will blow the doors off any plasma - in almost every way shape and form.
(picture quality wise)

but,
LCD is definately well worth looking at. LCD direct view, at least. LCD projection still has a ways to go. a good LCD set is brighter and sharper than a CRT. but... lacks the black levels (but is improving) and also lacks the "softness" and "lifelike picture" of a good CRT.

CE marketing is trying to phase out CRTs because of profit margins, cost to manf, etc. but still make some great sets b/c of demands of certain customers. i recommend that you do some more research - and be careful what advice you take from where. (especially stores)

now don't get me wrong... eventually fixed pixel displays will surpass CRT - but that time is not here. and it WILL NOT be plasma.
