Is hypocrisy in normal everday situations a bad thing? I don't think so. People have such a problem with it but really, whats the big deal? I started smoking back in highschool and still do ... if I tell a kid that he shouldn't smoke I am a hypocrite but does that make my advice any less valid? Does me smoking make me less credible? I smoke, I know the effects of it. I continue because I can't stop. If I go to jail for doing something really dumb and when I get out I decide to go around doing lectures for kids to keep them out of jail ... that's hypocracy but I don't see anyone complaining about these types of programs.
I bring this up because I got into an argument with a friend about speeding. She does not drive very often and when she does she purposely speeds and drives more aggresively than she knows how to handle. I say purposely b/c she tells me that she doesn't need to go that fast nor does she get any particular enjoyment out of pure speed but instead because she wants to see if she can. Same goes for the aggresive driving. When I brought it to her attention that she shouldn't be driving like she does because its dangerous and there's no need she gets defensive (which is expected and ok) and decides to call me a hypocrite. Now I enjoy a good debate but calling me a hypocrite does nothing for your argument. Yes I drive fast and aggressive. No I am not a professional race car driver and should drive more defensively and slower. This however has nothing to do with what she is doing.
Many people just need to make the mistake themselves to learn from it.
If you are one of the people who really can learn from other people's mistakes without having made them yourself, you've got a huge advantage on the majority of the population.

If a girl gave me lip like that I would look at her with a OJ Simpson look and say, " Does IronRicey have to choke a beotch?" then I bet she'd shut the fook up.

I get into these kinds of debates on a daily basis. I too am a smoker, yet I tell people who I see lighting up that it's bad for them, but I then proceed to light up my cig. I think it's a good way to tell people that it is addicting and habit forming (oral fixation). But healthy debates can often be very hypocritical.
IMO I think everyone is a hypocrite, just like everyone is a sinner, to a certain extent. So her calling you a hypocrite is being hypocritical.
it wasn't her calling me a hypocrite that got me mad ... I admit to being a hypocrite and personally don't see much wrong with it in most situations ... just pissed me off that her defense was calling me a hypocrite which isnt a defense at all
I think it would be funny to see people's reactions from within the smoking cliques that often form outside the entranceways to bars/clubs/restaurants, if each and every person that walked outside to light up were to say to everyone else out there... "you know.. you shouldn't smoke. It's really bad for your health", then light up, and if they did it every single time they went out there.

As a non-smoker, I do find it comical though that a smoker would tell another smoker not to smoke because it's bad for them and the reason you do is because you can't quit. I'm sure it's just as difficult for that other person to quit as it is for the person who is making the supposedly hypocritical comment.
In general, I think most people take offense to someone commenting on their bad habits, whether the person making the comment is also guilty of the same offense or not(particularly with smoking, because it's almost like you're calling them stupid, since you'd have to be a true moron to not be aware of the health hazards of smoking).
As a non-smoker, wouldn't you find it almost just as annoying if I told you that smoking is bad for you and you shouldn't do it? How about I just say, "hey... you look like a moron so I'm going to make you aware of the fact that smoking is bad for you.... Just in case you didn't know".

i do see that point but my smoking reference wasn't about me saying it to some other guy who's been installing cancer for years ... that was towards a highschool kid ... mabe 15-16 who hopfully hasn't been smoking for too long ... not meant to condem but rather phrased as good advice.

Anyone else get problems like this?
I haven't lectured the Princess about her driving habits for some time now, so no I do not have any problems like this. :P
I think that if you can educate others then you are not being a hipocrite, but making an honest attempt to help prevent them making your mistakes.
