You don't wash seasoned iron with soap, but you still have to wash it sometime! I wash mine with white vinegar and kosher salt.

But my point was that I wouldn't even use comet on something like iron, let along paint

Soaps aside, the problem with hand washes is basically the same - you could just as easily have a small pebble in the sponge/mitt of the 'professional' as well as the weekend fundraiser. This was a hard learned lesson from a very particular friend and a jet black Porsche 911. It was not good.

WTF?!? I'd sooner put Comet in my gas tank. What lunatic wouldn't know that Comet is what you use to clean out the dirty ring in your bath tub after a mangy dog took a soak. Or that Comet is for cleaning stains out of your metal sink. The only time it should be near your car is when it is in the transport from the store to your trunk to under your sink. Sodium dichloro-s-triazinetrione dihydrate is not to be used on painted surfaces. Not that I would have ever gone to a charity wash, I pay people to stay away from my car...but this is freaking me out...I have nightmares when I am confronted by a new stupid thing that humans have done...it was bad enough just hearing the sad tale of hail near your G Struan...but knowing that comet was in a bucket washing cars...I cannot live peacefully with this horrible knowledge.
