OK I've got this itch only a gun can scratch. I've always had an interest in the 454 Casull and I happened by a Ruger chambered for this. Any thoughts on the Ruger Super Redhawk?
Personal preference wouldn't be for a revolver. I'll ask some of my friends who know more about guns about it.

ruger makes a really solid gun, almost impossible to break. they also have an unwritten lifetime warrenty. if you manage to break something, just send it back and they fix it. they aren't the most refined of pistols, (although the red label shotguns are top notch) but they are like a good truck, hard to beat.
but why the 454? plan on hunting buffalo at 20 yards?
my father works at a gun shop and i've been in hundreds of pistol matches, so i know a fair bit.
Rugers are good, but the ammo will be expensive is the gist of what my friend had to say about it.

Dirty Harry's 44 mag aint got jack $H1* on the Casull round. Sort of like why does your car need more power.......it just does.
I don't hunt just shoot occasionally for fun. Ruger is the best blend of all the Casull guns out thus far (Freedom Arms is an arm and a leg for their variant and the other manufacturers don't rate high on my quality scale).
I can also run 45 Colt long in the gun for about $22/box of 50, not a bad price. The only Casull rounds available are jacketed hollow points that average about $1.00/round.
I've been having the craving for a Ruger Vaquero for a while and just happened along the Super Redhawk chambered for Casull.

i have a vaquero in 45 colt, and it's a lot of fun to shoot. not too accurate considering it really have sights, but it'll teach you how to shoot by pointing, which will in turn develop your ability to acquire a target faster. it's also a must if you decide to get into cowboy action shooting. 45 colt is, as you noticed, a lot cheaper to shoot, but not a really accurate round. from what i hear, the 454 is not all that fun to shoot with the amount of smack it lays into your hand. if you really want a big boom, i think smith and wesson makes a 500 raging bull. all in all, if you can afford the ammo and don't mind the kick, it'll impress your friends. i did notice that it'll accomodate the 45 colt, which is nice. kinda like shooting 38's in a 357.
the copout is to say "it all depends on what your interests are".
I have fired a friend's SS Super Red Hawk .44mag many times and it packs a pretty good whallop.
And, IIRC, the hammer has a nasty tendency to bite now and again too.
Ruger makes a very good product, I own/owned many of them. The 454 Casull is a powerful cartridge, not as powerful as some others out now. The good thing is that you can shoot 45 Colts in the same gun, the can reduce the cost of plinking and make it more comfortable to shoot.

Wow, that's not good, especially since this load is a lot hotter than the 44mag.
Thanks for the input.

Shoot for fun? Try a .22 for plinking or target.
Shoot for self-defense? Get a .357 (can shoot .38's for practice)
or a .45Auto
Try the Casull, it kicks like a mule!
or Get a Ruger Vaquero or Bisley in 44Mag/45Colt

.22 isn't all that fun to shoot imo.
.223 is pretty fun, especially with something low recoil like an AR15.
7.62 is a total blast and will definately get your attention if you're not expecting the kick.

Actually, I just remembered, he handloads most everything and is definitely the kind of guy who +plus loads. I'm sure off the shelf .44mag ammo would be more manageable. Still, not a gun for small hands IMO.
I always wanted to get the Cx4 Storm by Beretta. http://www.calssportingarmory.com/berettacx4storm.htm
Now I don't know which one I want to get, the .40 or the .45. I just want a gun that's fun to shoot and I don't go hunting so it'll be just for the range.

I agree that a.223 & 7.62 are fun, but I sincerely doubt that the local Hawaiian constables will not frown upon that sort of practice in their backyard. Thus a .22 would make a better choice for plinking cans, targets and the ocassional vermin rat. Hang ten!
