That's a tow-in surfer. You cannot get enough speed to get down the face on some waves due to wind conditions, current, and (usually) size. So these guys use jet skis to get that initial speed to catch the wave (more safely).

The wave is maybe a (face height) 40 footer. Stuff at Waimea Bay gets that big occasionally and sometimes larger.

I've heard of tow-in guys doing this over here in Hawaii (off of Kaena Pt on Oahu and some spots on Maui), in North California, and my guess is that the holy grail is some spot in the Pacific where you've got an underwater peak.

Those big wave guys are nuts in general.

Oh there were some nut cases here surfing during Hurrican Iwa back in the early 80s. Hurricane yeah.......but the surf is good.

It's the Cortes bank like a 100 miles off the coast of San Diego. I recently watched the movie Step into Liquid...great documentary if you haven't seen it....and they had a group of pro surfers head out there by boat and ride waves ALL day long. They had a video of a guy riding one wave where they estimated the face at 66 freakin' feet! All this with tons of sea lions watching (and you know what you find when you have sea lions right???)

Unbelievable. Another good movie is Riding Giants. Laird Hamilton riding some insane waves in Hawaii and Tahiti (among other things)

When I was in the Coast Guard I taught one of the guys on the base that had a small speed boat how to surf a boat wake. People had these monster boats on Long Island that would make huge swells for their wakes. The only problem with surfing a wake is that is pisses of the boat owner seeing your boat heading towards his. You have to act quick to pull out as you approach them.

Damn,

I would need one of them jet-ski motors with a hand held throttle on the bottom of my surf board, so when that wave crest started catching up with me I would say, Ta Ta MF, I am out of here.

They made stuff like that in the early 80's when I was really into surfing. They used a small 2 stroke gas engine on a 10' tanker. Built up a fiberglas housing around the engine. The guys used to use it to go fishing.

Oh and Ru......that was cold man.

Posting nekkid pictures of your g/f would prove to Ru how wrong he was. You need to do it to defend your woman's honor, it's what a southern gentleman would do.

See what you can do. I think Ru is picturing something like this right now:

It is indeed a prickly shark. Pictures (preferably nekkid) of the g/f would be extremely helpful as your successful identification of the shark does not bode well for your case.
