Default Some SOB rear ended me---TWICE!!! ...and then threatened me!

I can't believe this shit!!! I was driving home from work tonight after it had snowed earlier in the day and I had just gone through the toll booth off of the PA turnpike. Basically, ~6-7 lanes have to merge into one lane to go under a bridge. Now, every clear-minded individual in this world must realize that the process of merging requires that you squeeze in front of some cars and others squeeze in front of you.

Well, I merged in front of this car and continued on my way, foot by foot because of the heavy traffic, and was looking to merge in with other cars when I got bumped from behind by this car. So I stopped my car, started to open my door, and the son of a bitch bumped me again!! So I yelled "you hit me, TWICE" and walked back towards his car and the bastard is calling me every name in the book.

He was apparently pissed off because I got in front of him... So I told him that we should exchange information and he starts threatening me, saying "I will get even with you..." and "you will pay for this, BIG". He was a freaking psycho and you could tell that he was dead serious. Fortunately, there was almost no damage to my car (just a few small scrapes on the bumper), but for God's sake, the bastard intentionally hit me twice!

I started to rationalize and argue with him to set him straight, but he kept threatening me, so I called 911, which pissed him off even more. While waiting for the police, I walked back to his car to start to exchange info to expedite the process before the police got there and he was cursing and threatening me again (what a dickhead!).

Needless to say, I went back into my car, waited for the police, and thought to myself..."do I pursue this issue, give him my personal information, and risk having him come to my house and follow up on his threats or do I try to handle it on a minimal basis by trying to have him give me some money to get it buffed out or something like that".

So the cop finally arrives at the scene and I explained the situation. To make a long story a little shorter, the cop said that I had no choice but to exchange information with the guy if I wanted to do anything...so I told the guy that the damage was minimal and I would be satisfied if he took care of getting my bumper buffed out, which he agreed to. However, he only gave me his business card and told me to call him to get it taken care of (not exactly what I had in mind).

So, guess what profession would be best suited for an arrogant asshole with an explosive personality, who would have the audacity to intentionally hit a $40k car twice with their new Lincoln Towncar and threaten to get even with somebody and make them "pay" severely because they merged in front of them... A freaking union big wig (Business Manager). I'm sure he could find any number of henchmen to teach me a lesson.

For those of you who may not know, Philadelphia is "the city of brotherly love" and Pennsylvania's slogan was "You've got a friend in Pennsylvania". Bullshit!

Sorry to hear about this ck.

Here's my take on things. I would have guessed construction for the person (so "business agent" would be correct). While the business agents here aren't the thugs they once used to be I'm not so sure that is the case up where you are.

It is entirely possible that he might (1) shaft you on the bill, (2) actually have someone take care of the situation (business agents tend to meet a lot of people and it is entirely possible that he can find someone to do this for him for free), (3) really have your car messed up.

I'd talk to the guy and say you are just going to get the bumper buffed out by a reputable body shop. Ask him if he wants to pay the bill directly, or if you should pay the bill, then send a copy of the invoice over to him to get reimbursed. I'm really on the fence if you go to a shop he wants to send you to (unless you know they are completely above board and are watching them work on your car 100% of the time).

Hope it works out. Another unfortunate case of traffic induced road rage.

Princess in the day "business agents" were the gorillas the unions used to send around to make sure that the wheels were properly greased. In general you don't screw around with these guys since they usually had a pretty rough upbringing. I've heard stories where some of these guys were able to rip quarters in half with their bare hands.

That in itself isn't too scary. The scary part is that they never used to care if they really messed people up and having long records on these guys used to be the norm rather than the exception.

Like I said above, this generally isn't the case down here anymore, but might not be so up in ck's neck of the woods.

It's best to tread lightly and correctly in this case.

Thanks for your sympathy guys. I actually looked his name up on the internet and he is definitely an important union guy and is the head of one local union. There were pictures of him with a nationally known state senator and other big politicians and there were many articles that named him as the head of the union that was fighting this, that, and the other thing. GZire is correct in how the unions operate, at least around here. I can't tell you how much corruption and threats go on in the area.

I think that I am just going to forget about it and take it to a friend of mine who does very good body work. It's not worth following up on it and risking my family's well being... I'm just worried that he may have gotten my license number and will have someone look up my address from that.

They can usually handle someone yelling at them. So long as you don't damage their pride I think you are ok.

I think it's prudent to do it yourself. Just tell him you thought about it and you'll eat the cost. Don't apologize, these guys are usually all over you if they know someone is apologizing (right or wrong).

ugh, what a sh!thead. i don't have a high tolerance for people who are immediately pissed off and rude, especially when they try to put the blame off on me when it was clearly their fault. you def handled the situation better than i would have ck. i would have had no tolerance anyways after him hitting me twice ON PURPOSE. i simply would have pulled a bat out and told him to hand over his info in a situation like that.

i hope the guy doesn't try to screw you and not pay for the damage to your car.

Man that's rough. I'm involved with some unions out here and there are some guys that I can totally see acting exactly the way that you describe. But this ain't the east coast. The unions here are social clubs compared to the unions there.

I hate to say it, I mean I really really hate to say it, but I think that eating the loss in this case is probably prudent.

damn ck. Sorry to hear what happend. I think you're taking the safer/smarter route. Philly is still very mobbed up and the local unions are still quite corrupt. Ya said the damage was minimal and you're absolutely right in that your family's safety is paramount. Hope things work out well. Let us know whats happening.

Unions on the East Coast are still very hand on, if you get my drift. You would be better off fixing this problem yourself and then sending him a bill with a P.O. Box address on it. You never know, he might actually pay for it.

Just chock it as hit and run. Your deductible would be higher any way. I can feel the pain because if someone hit my car I sure as hell would want them to pay. But the "Famiy Business"....they can actually be friendly. Have a funny story but I'm not going to tell it here. The end of the story is, lets say my family has a favor coming someday. It is nice to hold a card like that.

I grew up in Pennsylvania, Scranton area. At the time the "Family Business" was strong. They were in a lot of pockets, political, law, judicial, you name it was all controlled. This was a place were you got jobs based on who you knew and not what you knew. I imagine there is still a lot there today. Everyone is keeping a low profile. No large names in the public eye.

Hey AZ, I grew up in and around Wilkes-Barre and still have a lot of family in the WB/Scranton area. You're absolutely right about the corruption in that area. It is worse there than anywhere I have ever seen. It may help explain why the area has been so depressed for so many years. I'm so glad I got out of there when I did. When did you move away?

ck, glad you are able to control your temper. I don't know what I would do in that kind of situation...

It sounds like you are leaning towards not taking action against the guy. Good idea. If he is that high of a public figure, he would probably take every step necessary to clear his "good" image. It's not worth the hassle.

If he acts this way in his business practices, karma will come back to kick his psycho crazy ass one day and he's going to get screwed. He may think he is big, but there is always someone bigger that can fuck him up.

I hope everything works out for the best
