I know it is not real racing, Formula One is the only true race out there. But for common folks to go out and play SCCA is okay. Ain't really racing, just driving around cones....
The C5 Corvette proved to be the weapon of choice in A-Street Prepared taking 3 of the top 4 spots. Gary Tomason, James Gunn-Wilkenson and Scotty White all trophied in C5s with the lone Lotus of Mark Huffman taking the 2nd spot. B-Street Prepared continued the Corvette theme with Bill Buetow, James Fingerman and Guy Ankeny, all in C4 Corvettes, taking the trophies. E- Street Prepared gained two new drivers during the off season when Tom Berry and Glen Hernandez both moved out of Stock Classes to try he higher horsepower cars. Berry managed to take the win while Hernandez was one spot out of the trophies.
What Lotus was used in this race? Certainly not a new Elise or probably any Elise. All we know is that a Lotus of undetermined model type, race preparation and driver skill beat 2 of 3 immensely more powerful C5 Corvettes. Makes sense to me!

Okay, I am ready...

A nearly 40-year old Lotus Elan sitting on what are, by today's standards, skinny tires (that also are far from the best soft rubber compound available in real and current [wider] racing tires), beat two brand new fat-tire C5 Corvettes with a 200+ horsepower advantage. I'm not trying to be funny or sarcastic, either. Now you see just how advanced the handling of a Lotus is -- a car that old beating two new Corvettes. And, I wouldn't be surprised if the Elan lost to the winning Corvette by a second or less. What do you honestly think the result is going to be when these C5's tangle with a 2004 Lotus Elise? .....Good-bye C5's.
And I agree with you, Lotus cars are great. They just happen to fall into the same class as Corvettes, funny how that turns out. The icon of Britian running against the American icon. It just shows that there are many ways of winning.
Hey brit,
I wanted to point out that when you said old ('70s) lotuses were the best cars out there (not in so many words), several people pointed out how unlikely that is considering the steady march of technology since then, but you remained quiet. Now, when Gard said new C5s beat an old Lotus, you bring the age up as an excuse. Seems inconsistent to me.
I'd like to add something to the analysis: the Lotus beat and was beaten by the same car. I think that shows the importance of the driver--it doesn't matter what car you have, the most important factor in your performance is you.
Don't ya'll get it yet? Brit is just here to argue. Maybe it relieves stress for him. It dosen't matter what you say, the argument will just go around, and around in circles. We have all heard the "Lotus is superior" thing too many times. Can we argue about something else?

Maybe brit is a redneck at heart. It goes back to the old ford vs chevy debate, however he choose lotus. So obviously he is a chevy person since both chevy and lotus fall under the general.
Well I guess I took the Ford side, because he comes from a "Chevy family". It was a few years ago, and we were drinking. I think I was just saying that Chevy is no better than Ford, and vice versa. I drove a Dodge Ram at the time, so I didn't really take either side. I think Ford, Chevy, and Dodge all have good, and bad things about them. I just like the way Dodges (trucks) look better.

brit,
i'm tired but i'll try to be polite... the lotus is a go-kart. plain & simple. have you ever seen the new super karts they make & race today? They are small, small, small, with motercycle engines & skinny tires. they run any course faster than any car(except for maybe a few "supercars"). no doubt about it.. check the web. read the articles in the magazines, check the times. Super karts are not toys, but they're not cars either. They do have there place. and you should remeber that. my $0.02
No, Stru, exactly the opposite. In spite of its age, a 40-year old Lotus, the only one in a race with three C5's, beat two of them -- and the reason it didn't beat all three of them is solely because its tires are just one-third as wide. That has nothing to do with Lotus' advanced and excellent engineering. Lotus doesn't make tires. It had to use whatever was available at the time. Tell me -- how do you think a '65 Elan, one that just beat two late model C5's, would do against 100 '65 Corvettes? I would bet a month's pay it would beat all 100 of them. Handily. Remember, I and others have also said that only now are cars being built that are beginning to approach the handling characteristics of Lotus cars built 30-40 years ago. Of all the cars in the world, does Corvette come to mind first when thinking of the best handling car in the world? Of course not. Also remember that a Lotus Elan won the SCCA C production class two years running. C production. Corvettes. Porsches. Z's. XKE's. You name it. The Lotus beat it.
