Bizz, I did all that you recommended until step 3, the filter boxes would not part enough to take to old filter out. There seemed to be something binding the two boxes. Any further help appreciated.

dwinter, there are 4 clips holding the box on; two on top, and one on either side near the bottom corners.

Are you still having trouble? Its not going to come out easy, Yank it out!! PS make sure you put the new filter in the right way. Keep in mind the way the old filter was in the box.

1) Remove bolt holding to the inside of the frame.
2) Unsnap 4 clamps on box. (this is brused knuckles)
3) Unscrew the clamp on the convoluted rubber connector to throttle body assembly. Clamp closest to box.
4) Work the rubber tube back off the plastic tube attached to the box. This lets you move the rear section of the box around.
5) Lift up the rear section of the box and push back. Box will open enough for you to see the filter...pull it back, up and out.
6) Insert the K&N, it's tight, but doable.
7) When K&N is fully seated snug the rear section of the box to the front section and work the 4 clamps on the box closed. This is difficult, more brusied knuckles...the K&N is a little thicker that the stock Nissan paper filter so you really have to squeeze the box and work the clamps over till they snap into place.
Work the rubber tube back over the rear section tube and tighten the clamp. Saliva lubrication helps.
9) Reinstall the hold down bolt and your good to go!

(Note: Disconnect the mass airflo sensor harness (electical connector) from the air box tube its easier to work with it out of the way....BUT!!!!!!do not start the engine with it disconnected. Connect it then start.
