I had high expectations for the new 1 series, especially the 135i, but I'm a bit dissapointed. First, the damn thing weighs way too much. It needs to loose like 300 lbs. Then it's way too expensive by about $4 to $7k. The way got it now, I don't understand their logic. It's priced too damn close to the 3 series and it's performance isn't all that different. So why would I buy the 1 series when for a bit more I can buy the 3? I figure the people who can't afford the 3 will go for the 1, but I think they'd be sold short.

I'm not a fan of the 1 series. I think you pay too much for what you are getting.
My other concern is parts availability for the model as it hasn't come to the US before. I'd opt for a 3 series if I was you and see how the 1 series plays out over the course of the next year or two before you take that plunge.

I totally agree. If they were going for more of a purist driving experience, then why didn't they trim the fat and let that 335 engine make some serious numbers (at least compared to the 335i). If instead they were going for a price point/value thing, it's too damn close(AGAIN) to the 335i.
I too think they muddled it all up by not defining it more distinctly from the 335i....why take the stepchild for just a little less?? BMW's have always frustrated me with their pricing though...they seem to always set themselves about 15% overpriced from any reasonable valuation. Oh well, I'm sure it's all part of creating that image of "exclusivity"; seems to be quite profitable for them so far!
It's going to be very interesting to see how the 1 series does in sales. I can see that there will be those diehard Bimmer fans that'll take this car into a niche. I mean I can see some buying a stripped 135i and doing some serious mods and dropping some lbs. for a real track star. Otherwise, I can't really see lots of people going for a smaller, bit cheaper, 1 series.
What I can see though, is that those who can't afford say a 328i (younger crowd) will be going for the 125i. Which I think is the value propostion of the two, between the 125i and the 135i.

I fucking hate when you beat me to a good post...you say all the shit that i was going to say!!!!!
to add a few things...the car probably handles and brakes like no other car out there. But this car actually looks like a cheap BMW (it is)...something about it...weight til you see it in person. My local BMW dealership had one on their raised platform near the street as i drove by...looked cheap. Car has a small wheelbase and is really narrow. With some 19's and lowered it would make a big difference.
