Something that was brought to my attention by a german car fanactic friend of mine....the slowest and most inexpensive AMG's from 2005 (C55, CLK55, SLK55) are all faster than any current S series AUDI. DAMN!

the cheapest AMG you mentioned (the c55) started at $55,000 in 2005, which is more expensive than either the 2008 s4 or 2008 s5. so what's your point?

Since it's been available for a couple of years now, we're all pretty familiar with the Audi S4: 340-hp put through all the wheels and controlled with a six-speed box. The C55 is MB's replacement for the C32 AMG— in accordance with their movement away from supercharged engines, MB has bounced the C32's 3.2 liter V6 in favor of a 5.4 liter V8. Review-wise, there are two sides to weigh, since R&T gets all judgemental in terms of both raw data and subjective driving experience. On the strict performance tip, the C55 outperforms the S4 in every category, from 0-60 right on down to fuel economy. But the S4 takes the subjective race, albeit by less of a margin. It's simply more engaging to drive. Potential deal breakers could be the C55's auto transmission, and its price, just over $60K, $10,000 more than the S4. Sure, $60K buys a lot of car, but if it was my money, I'd be in the S4 just so I could get the manual, not to mention the all-weather versatility. R&T, however, feels a bit differently.
does anyone know the c55's actual 0-60? all i can find is edmunds quoting it at 5.6 0-60 and 13.95 through the 1/4. that's slower than the c32. wtf, that doesn't seem right?
the s4 does it in 5.4.

But one think I still dont get is that, even for this gen of cars, people still compare the S line from Audi to that of the AMGs and M line. The S line is far more comparable to the 4.8 L 360 hp BMW models and the 5.5 L 382 hp Merc models. Whereas the 4.2 L 420 hp RS model is the proper competitor to M and AMG. I see the reason for why the S5 is being compared to the M and AMG lines, being the cost is in the middle, but an RS5 will come out. The dealer told me it will possibly be out as a 2010 model. So I think all comparsions to the M3 and C63 AMG should be reserved until then.
again, we're talking a couple tenths of a second, for 10-20k more. most ppl aren't going to be so concerned. if they were, they wouldn't go for the c55 when the srt8 is just as fast for 1/2 the price.
