Was just reading the latest Nissan Sport mag and they said that a Nissan Engineer told them that the next Z will be a 400Z. WTF???!!! They also said that they've never been been wrong with their info.
If this is true and the new Z looks better than the current one I'd look into it. It's supposed to be the Z they wanted to build originally and that it will be lighter and smaller than the current one. With a 4.0L V6 or V8 that thing should be a monster. Good stuff. Here's hoping.

I wouldn't doubt the engine, but have serious questions about the weight. Unless Nissan goes with a singular platform with the Z I don't see how they can shed weight.

i dont think it should be smaller...lighter? yes! that would definitely enhance the performance. upping the power output will be negated by any additional weight.
case in point G37.

Well when they say smaller they don't mean a huge decrease. Remember that article about the smaller 350Z some time ago? Well, it was only marginally smaller, but they said the weight loss was significant (like in the area of 250 lbs.). So add that with a 4.0L V6 or the V8 and this thing should really become a sports car. I say it'll be a V8, because a 3.7/3.8 V6 is really pushing the limit for a 6. So I'd say it'll be a v8, but who knows.

The 4.0L from the Frontier would be nice at the pumps. Near the same power as the 3.5L, but it runs on 87 octane. Haven't really paid a lot of attention to the performance mods people have done with the engine.

but those pictures are BS. that's not a 400z, that's the concept V37
Agreed on the pics, they are terrible and clearly G-ish. I can understand how the uninitiated might even say Altima (with the new Altima styling), but a Z? Puhlease......
A quote from the article:
Quote:
Another possibility is to maintain the current 3.5-liter displacement and offer some big turbos to boost the power. While less elegant and refined, this second choice would be cheaper. We should also consider that by then, Nissan will have another turbocharged coupe in the line-up, the new Skyline. This is why we consider that the V8 400Z is more probable. Either way, mated with the engine will be a refreshed 6-speed manual gearbox.
What is unrefined or not elegant with a turboed engine? I supposed a 911TT is unelegant and unrefined. These guys are morons.

If they are speculating a V8 than means the VK engine. To shed 250 lbs purely through changes of materials is going to be extremely difficult and expensive.
Again it goes against the theories of Ghosn to do things that way, so unless the Z is going to tap an existing platform from Nissan the Z is going to get really expensive in a hurry (unless the G platform will change with it and maybe the Altima?).

I seriously hope that they don't source that v8 from some truck. I mean really...
It also said on Nissan Sport mag that the engineer stated that they're going to build the 400Z like they wanted to when the original 350Z came out. So I think they might take the car to the next level. Probably in price too, but I won't mind if that thing performs and looks better than the current Z.
GZ, if they are really aiming to make this a true sports car with a possible v8 or high power HUGE v6, then I can picture them dropping a few hundred lbs. from the weight. I mean that's one of the biggest downfalls of the FM chassis cars. They're way too damn heavy.

why would they add a V8 to it?? i would think it would be too pricey then.
If Nissan wants more power, it is one way to go without going the more complicated route of going FI. They already have the VK as their workhorse for the V8 side. Essentially doing the same thing that the VQ is doing for the sub 4.0L side.

I agree the FM is too heavy, but it's cost cutting move. If Nissan wants to cut weight they really need a separate platform to do so. If they can use the platform for multiple cars, it's less money for them and in turn less for the consummer.
The G helped save Nissan, if they fall into making an S2000 they could be taking a very large step backwards unless the Z kills in the sales department.

Make that sub 4.1L side... VQ40 is their 4.0L v6
