i think mobil 1 has an oil filter that lasts 10K...i don't know if i would want to test it to that extend regardless of their reccomendation.
Oh, well sorry I don't have the time to get you the research, but do some searching I'm sure you can find something.

In terms of VTEC, Honda pioneered their use in F1 motors and in a matter a few years they were available for purchase by the public in their cars. That I would say is something that doesn't usually happen in a mass sense and in such a short amount of time.

Also, in terms of testing the 15k miles, well, it's being tested every day as we speak. It seems to be working so I wouldn't worry about it. There are other manufacturers today that use lifetime tranny fluids and such, so it's not that huge of a deal, IMO.

If I'm not mistaken they've had VANOS on their motors for a decade or more. They've had it on their street cars for almost that too. Somebody else who has some details chime in here.

Everyones got variable valve timing in some sort or another, just like everyone's experimented with "hemis."

I would think it's not so much engine durability as it is about the filter. You can run an engine on some filthy oil, but if you can't trap the particles or if the particles that are trapped slow down the oil flow then you've got some serious issues.

2nd If you drive both cars and find out which you like better....100-200 a month isn't going to change your opinion about a car.
I agree with your first point. I actually think if you have to finance/lease the car at all to get it, then it may be more than you should spend.

Regarding your second point, I disagree. $200/month in payments can/should easily impact your feelings about a car. If you think two cars are very close to being equal and you don't think $200 per month in savings (or ~$10K in total price) should impact your opinion at all, then you are either A) stupid or B) so wealthy that the 3 series is probably a beater car for you anyway.

In my case, it's not $100 to $200 per month that changed my mind (after all, I could always reduce the payment of either car by that much by financing/leasing over a longer period). It's the purchase price difference of $10K (and the home theater with projector and sound system that it buys) that is the reason not to buy a marginally better performing car with lower reliability and higher depreciation rate. And yes, if they were much closer to the same price, I would buy the BMW, but price matters.
