Default Why 3 piece wheels??

So I'm not a wheel expert by any stretch. I'm kind of unclear on the advantages/reason for 3 Piece wheels. I love the Maya RT5's and STM's but when I asked about them, this sales guy mocked me for buying a 3 piece wheel for a g35. He said for my application, I'd never take advantage of a 3 piece wheel. I just walked away. I'll take my 4 grand elsewhere. Cocksucker.

In a racing setup it allows you to tailor tire width from track to track with just a single set of rims. On the road, not so much reason that I know of.

One advantage of having multi piece rims for the street is that if you get damage to one part you can just have the damaged part replaced. Of course, given that your multi piece rim is held together by bolts/screws/etc.. I have a 3 piece rim that is actually welded together, so I won't get any advantages there. Seriously though, for the road there really isn't any particular advantage to having multi piece wheel. I think I've even read somewhere that a single piece rim is actually lighter for the most part compared to their multi piece counterparts.

Not always, in fact the opposite might be true in most cases.

In addition to what Zoomers & Phelan have said, the 3/2 piece wheels also will usually allow you to get more complex designs that a one piece. You can also mix different materials together instead of having a solid aluminum wheel.

The salesman is an idiot.
