Default Warm up

Hey, do any of you give your car some time to warm up after a cold night?

I toss my laptop bag in, start it up, retrieve the newspaper and toss it on the porch, then wait 5-15min to pull out of the driveway onto the highway depending on traffic.

always. My buddy works at as a mechanic and told me that a lot of problems he sees on engines is because people don't give the engine proper warm up time and it just destroys the engines a lot quicker than they should degrade

Yes, even in warm AZ I like to give 20-30 seconds before taking off. As it cools off I would extend that time up to 1-2 minutes. You just want to make sure your allowing time for oil to reach through all the journals from the pan. The colder it is, the thicker the oil, thus a longer warm up is necessary.

Having lived in sub-zero climates in the past, I think 2-3 minutes is adequate at the extreme. Those microbeaded VQ surfaces should help engine life too.

All the time!

A minute at least. 5 minutes I think is just right. In this time, I chane the CD's in the changer or use the California Car Duster to wipe down any dust.

But most definitely warm up your car.

Now, when it's 0 degrees outside when I get to my car after work, I wait a good 10-15 mins before driving off. I just wait for the temp gauge to start going up. There's this girl at my parking lot that EVERY SINGLE DAY just gets in her car and drives off 2 secs after turning it on (literally) even at these temps. Funny thing is that I haven't seen her car lately .

It's never really that cold here in the OC, but regardless I always let my car idle until the RPM's drop under 1000. Sometimes this takes a few minutes, other times its pretty quick.

thanks, I am usually in a rush sometimes tho. I let it warm for 2 minutes in park, than I let it idle in drive for another 2 minutes. Than I drive it slowly for the next 3 or 4 minutes.

I read on edmunds "it is no longer 1960, you dont need to warm your car up!" so I was confused if I should or not.

Either way, I DEFINITLY think it makes a difference, as the engine itself sounds and runs smoother if I wait a few minutes

Default Never let you car idle!!!

Read Bobistheoilguy.com. Unless its extremely cold, you should start the car and drive at low speeds and rpms (<2500) for 5-8mins. Thats how you warm up your car. Don't be a moron. Prolonged idle causes the most damage, especially at low operating temp. Hope all are using syn oil.

Whoah dude, no need for name calling. Don't be an a-hole, some people may just not be aware of this.

you don't need to drive, you just shouldn't idle it. i was told this from working with boat mechanics and i guess it would be the same with cars. usually let it warm up at about 1500-2k rpm because it disperses the oil throughout the engine quicker.

and being a moron is listening to what one guy told you and then calling other poeple morons for not listening to him, even if he is right.
