Exactly what I was going to say. You can find a lot of savaged IS300s in junk yards and get the headlights from there. Don't always think on the bad side, it's a very good car inside and out. Easily modded if you look at the right places, ask around on different forums such as, lexuslovers.com, clublexus.com or is300.net as mentioned. Like GZire said, it is a 5-spd MT so i don't know what he'll think about that, but g'luck!

one issue with the IS300 ... if you want a used manual good luck finding one. Mabe it's just up here in the Northeast but before when I was looking for one I could only find 1 within 100 miles and it was in bad condition.

S14 is a nice car...how about getting the silvia s15? Those cars are crazy. You should look into getting the S15 Spec R. Did I mention its turboed? There a place in cali that has them imported for about 19-25k. Oh yea and the s15...MAD DRIFT CARS!!!
Heres link about the S15
http://www.j-garage.com/2310.htm

Dam i didnt know they imported S15's to the USA. This is a learning experience for both me and my cousin. He's been a big fan of the S15 but over here in FL you dont see them muh less the S14's you always see those riced out S13's (180sx) running around here. I looked at the (2000) lexus RS200 Z edition and the price inst that bad neither is the price for the Silvia S15. Are they Right hand drive so that might be the only problem. My cousin is most liely gona go witht he IS300, since his favorite car is the Supra. I wonder if you can mate the Supra tranny to the IS300 engine (instant 6MT)

This girl across the street from our house owns a Nissan 300zx (in beautiful condition) i asked her how much she'd want for it and she said it wasnt for sale.

I guess the 2 main contenders for him is the IS300 or S14 silvia.

dude, not to ruin your helping out but Silvias are not legal in the US. None of them are! Thats why you don't see many true silvia's or 180sx's in the US. They could never pass emissions. Only big name Nissan car were the skylines that could be imported and that was by motorex and that was by lots of skylines being tested and destroyed.

In Orlando I've only seen 1 silvia and 1 180sx that are real and daily driven but they did something illegal to get them in here.

i don't see how you can even consider a 240sx when your other choices are a supra or is300.....240's are junk... it's the new high school ricer trend.

the is300 is the VVT-i 2jz-ge, the supraTT is the 2jz-gte (no vvt-i but thats because valve timing is for slow na's)

the thing about the TT supra is that the motor is VERY stong. i have seen people put down 800-1000rwhp on a stock bottom end. besides that, the commuity is HUGE as well as the parts available. not to mention those cars are de-tuned from the factory so installing full 3 or 4 inch exhaust (yea i said 4" ) an intake and a boost controller with some 100 octane will put down 450 to the wheels. 450 with $1000 in basic mods? who else can do that? get a turbo kit, front mount ic and some fuel and you'll be anywhere from 500 to 800 without even trying. these cars love mods like us g guys love trophy girlfriends.

anyways....yeah the is300 is also a 2j, but it's a high compression, more complicated, not boost friendly motor. if he wants even 300 out of the lex he will need either a turbo or a bottle and the high compression will make that very dangerous. he would need to get a bigger HG to lower comp, not to mention figure something out with the trans. because the 5 speed is as rare as a fast honda and the auto just will not hold up.

the lex is just so much more work and not worth it IMO. get the TT

The Supra TT is very hard to get though, aren't they? Seems like you know your stuff and I have to admit, I was laughing with the rare as a fast honda thing.....hahaaa, pretty good info nonetheless

If you had to choose between those cars go with the Supra however if he's still in high school here is my take, get him a shitty beater like a civic or something and let him learn how to drive first. I am advidly against giving kids that much power on the road. They are to immature to understand the responsibilities they have with a high performance car. I can recall countless examples of some kids I knew with a fast car and wrecked it because of their inexperience and stupidity. Also, if he's not making the grades then IMHO he's not being responsible with what's going on with his life and his grades are a indication of how responsible he is. All I got to say is, "with great power comes great responsibility..." -Peter Parker's Uncle, however I don't think many young people understand this, especially with fast cars.

the price of the mk4 tt is going down. back in the day u could find one for $14k.....then fast and furious came out in theaters and the price for those samecars went to $30k. now u can find a decent one for $20-24, but to find a super low-milage or a rare color or a 97/98 model will get very pricey.

i do agree with iornrice in that a high powered car and high school kids don't mix. a first car shouldn't have a lot of power. an NA supra would be a good choice and after a few years upgrade to a turbo version....that's how i started at least.
