I talked to a G35 Coupe owner the other day and he said that he has put regular (87) octane in his G35 since he bought it, alternating with premium only every 8 or 10 tanks. He said that the notices no difference in fuel economy or performance but saves huge on the cost of gas.
I have heard that in the new G37 engine, this may not be the best idea. Has anybody tried putting gas other than premium in their car??
Haven't tried any other gas besides 91( I'm in L.A. Cali so 91 is our highest octain) but I think you would feel a little difference in performance but I don't think you would cause any damage if you used a lower grade, but couldn't tell you for sure and the manual says to put in 93-91 grade so thats what they recommend.
+1 on the savings not being worth having to rebuild a motor...
Higher octane is not for better mileage... they recommend it on higher horsepower motors because it helps keep the motor from pinging or knocking, which is pretty much a bad detonation in your motor.

high compression engines need higher octane gas so the fuel burns properly. The all the G's have high compression engines. If you are pinching pennies on gas maybe you shouldn't have purchased a 40k+ vehicle and gotten yourself a shiny boring Prius

I don't understand why people are continually criticized for trying to be economical. Just because you buy some expensive things it doesn't mean you should never try to save money on anything ever again. In this case, you should obviously stick to premium gas, but this person obviously wasn't sure about the negatives of not using the right octane and was just trying to get info about it to see if they could save some cash without negative consequences. They can't, but is it really a bad thing to make sure? If anything it's an intelligent thought.

He was just asking a question
that's what these forums are about
it's none of your business how much he pays for the car
who are you to belittle someone like that
well, to play devil's advocate, the g35c and 37 are pretty much the opposite of economical. not just because it's a gas guzzling fast coupe but also because of how expensive it is to maintain (tires, brakes etc). so it does seem a little silly to try to be economical in an uneconomical car.
hopefully the OP doesn't take offense to it, ppl here are just honest. that's what i like about this place.
