What? You're saying that your motor detonated? Not possible with the computers regulating motors today. This was a problem with carburation and no computers, not something that ever happens today.

You can use other than recommended ocatine. Your ECU will automatically retard timing to prevent detonation. Your car will most likely ping like a bell though. I've put in 87 when premium is required and all that stuff. No change other than a little less power and some pinging.
Sorry Zooms, I call BS. Just because you didn't outright frag your engine does not by any means mean it was OK or that you didn't cause accelerated wear and tear on your (expensive) engines.
Sure it could do some damage if you do it forever, but probably just about as much as running your motor harsh.
Engineers suggest a required fuel because of stated power and gas mileage reasons. If you use different fuel you can't expect what the factory promised.
Also pinging is a sign that detonation "could" happen, but if the ECU is retarding timing no detonation can occur so what's the problem? Is pinging bad for your motor? Well, I think it's simpler to say that pinging probably isn't good, but not specifically bad. I mean you can get pinging at high altitudes even with 91 gas or if you're towing large people . It happens and the ECU adapts to prevent detonation. So if you use lower ocatine and the ECU adapts, what's the problem? Other than a lil loss of power and mileage that is.
NO NO NO !! Pinging is detonation...it's just at the lower end of the damage scale!!! You best read up again son....

You mean like the wear and tear your motor goes through in general usage anyway? These are cars not diamonds. You buy one drive it for a few years and get another. It's not like these are Ferrari's.

Ok, so pinging is the incorrect phrase, but I think most knew what I meant. I guess more properly knocking. I put in whatever handle I grab when I put in gas and drive the hell out of all my cars and they've never had any problems for me.

How long do you keep your cars though? I guarantee if you drove them as hard and as often as you say, that they would definitely show signs of advanced wear if you torn those engines down. Pitting of the piston heads most likely, maybe some ring and valve wear too.

You wanna buy my car car porch? Special price for you my friend.

i honestly could not tell you what happened to my engine, i just know it sounded and acted horrible for a while. btw, the sedan supposedly can run on regular without any problem.
once i got back to premium on it, it got a little better, and the rest is history. oh well, i just know i wouldn't commit the same mistake on this car.
Don't get me wrong guys, I'm not saying y'all should run out and use 87 oct. I'm just saying there's not much proof that it's all that harmful to the motor. From what I remember reading the factory recommends it for MPG/smog, i.e. environmental/power rating reasons. I also know that with motors today running higher compressions it does make the motor run rough with lower octaine. I've yet to hear that using lower octaine causes detonation, now with the ECU doing it's job, or does some "real" harm to the motors.
In the end, do what suits you best.

Engine knocks do happen with the wrong gas, and they do damage your engine. The damage to your engine is definitely not worth the few bucks you save on gas.
In the manual it does say that if 91 is not available the next higher octane can be used but you shouldn't drive it hard and you should refill it with premium ASAP.
