Hey, hope you don't mind if I cut into your conversation.
I'm thinking my next car will be an 07 G35coupe. Question for me is 5sp Auto, or 6mt.
I am definately a fan of manuals. I used to touge with some friends in Los Angeles, ran autocross a few times (I am only illustrating that I like to drive, not that I'm good at it). Only thing is, I took a rental car down to LA to see friends on MLK weekend. Dodge Charger automatic, shittiest car ever, seriously I had to swap the car out twice, both had miles under 1k, and 3k respectively. Anyway....
Auto is SO easy. I used to live in LA, now up near SF. When I hit the 405 I realized I'd forgotten how bad the traffic was. I used to commute from Torrance to Westwood for school and remembered my left left being tired from the 2hrs in traffic in my 89 240sx.
So now I don't know if I should get the 6mt cuz I enjoy it, or the auto with tiptronic so I can have a bit of that control, but with the ease of automatic.
My driving is limited to work and back mostly. I don't go out driving much anymore. I was hoping I could just get your input on your experiences going from manual to auto for a daily commuter. Thanks for taking the time to read my long post.
What I'm hearing is auto with manual shifting may be ok for the daily commute, but only on certain cars. But if you want the g35, the manual is the way to go regardless of the kind of driving (since, as someone mentioned, the 6mt "makes the g35). Is this how you'd sum it up?
So, maybe my answer is not a g35 with this or that tranny, but an altogether different car?
I havent had a manual transmission since my first B5 Audi S4 and I missed it dearly...so when I went to look at my G37, there was no choice..MANUAL only..I learned my lesson the hard way!!

I know how you feel man!! 405 hwy is a bitch!!! LOL my girl used to live down there and I had drive all the way from Torrance to see her. G35 6MT was my first stick car that I've ever owned and I have admit it was the hardest stick car to drive ever!! I have many chances to test drive other stick cars such as Z4, M3, TT, Evo 9 MR, IS300, Carrera 4S, etc.. I found my G is the hardest to drive after all! well after a year of "daily tranining" I was still having trouble managing the clutch sometimes. I believed it's the car NOT me! Just recently I've noticed a burning smell from the car after I took it for a Vegas trip and guess what? the transmission fuild was leaking down to the exhaust pipes! It only had 8200 miles/10 moths old. Well, now it comest to G37S 6MT which I just purchased last week. man I feel the differences right away!! IMO the clutch is shorter, as well as the shifter. everything is just smoother overall. I am glad that Infiniti actually noticed the issues on the G35 clutch and fixed it.

if you need to use a shifter gate like training wheels to know what gear ur in then thats your deal. i've had about 4 manual cars as daily drivers, and somehow remembered what gear i'm on without the plate. you should be able to read teh tach and speedometer to figure what gear your own, but you should also just know by feelin where the shifter is.
I asked about a shift gate and got a lot of reply crap, the Ferrari and Lamborghini has ths shift gates and I enjoy the solid feel of the shifts, I have never ever mis-shifted in either of them. I thought it would be nice to also have a more positive feel shifter in the G35 since it is a "loose" feeling gearbox. Just trying to bring it up a notch
On shift gates "you never miss what you never ever had."
Thanks

In general, an MT adds to a more engaged feeling driving the car and it performs better on twisty hilly terrain, but in the city you have to rev it harder than an auto to keep up with traffic and with some models the MTs rev higher on the highway than the same car with a manual.
I have driven MTs all my life, but slowly I am getting to an auto for my next daily driver. The MTs are starting to feel crude compared to the autos.
Oh yea, and I am starting to hear a noisy bearing when I release the clutch pedal only after 20 K. I would not get the G in a manual again.
There is absolutely no question to asking what kind of G37 to buy... this car is meant to be ONLY driven on the 6mt. I just boutght mine a month ago and i love this car ... there is no problems with shifting gears like someone said on this post if you are a well experienced stick driver the car is the most best thing to drive.... any one who gets this car on the automatic transmission is missing out of the true power and driving experince whiuch comes with the manual tranny. I live in New York and believe me it is a busy place ... the thing about a manual car is that if you know how to operate it nice it does not even make 1 tiny bit of a difference if it is on stick or automatic and ur driving constantly in the city
Shift gates? Really? Just because Lambos and Ferraris use them sometimes...
I've only ever hear people bitch about them. Also how do you not know what gear you're in? Its not hard to keep track. If yours revving high around 50 and the shifters at the top your in 3rd not 5th. Basically same with 4th and 6th. Sheesh, some people...

Manuals are way manlier than automatic. If you drive an automatic, you must be gay. Oh and also, if you don't lift weights regularly and take steroids and your favorite sport isn't UFC and your favorite movie isn't scarface or terminator, then you're definitely not heterosexual--break up with your girlfriend now (but steal her pants, your gunna have to start wearing those now too), you'll realize soon enough, might as well get a head start.
