I just bought a 2007 G35x after having owned a 540ia for three years. I really didn't have it on my list to even look at it -- but, I ended up taking it for a spin and was amazed at the way it drove, even relative to my BMW.
As for gas mileage -- I think you can expect to be in the 20 MPG with reasonably 'fun' driving. Perhaps a bit better if you take it very easy. I don't expect much in the way of improvements beyond the 19.7 I was consistently getting in the 540.
With respect to gas -- I have researched this extensively. You don't 'need' to use premium. You will loose HP in the process -- as much as 5%. And, your gas mileage may suffer -- but, I am a skeptic there. That's it -- choice is yours. Personally, I use it.
Now the stereo -- I had my car in yesterday for a Satellite radio install. The loaner G35x had no premium. You really loose some nice touches, IMO, without it (like, for example, you end up with a cheapie rear-view mirror not fit for a near-luxury car). The stereo difference, for my ears, was huge. I was listening to the same playlist (iPOD) in both cars. With the Base Bose system the bass was WAY over-done, and no amount of playing with it brought it to the level I've found in the premium version. I would not hesitate to pay extra for this -- and, I am not an audio geek. I would say that the difference is (very) significant.
I think the car is a great choice. It's exceptionally comfortable too. That's my $0.02.
