passive is when it only sends power to the drive wheels (in this case, the rear) when one of them slips, then power gets sent to the front.
other vehicles like subaru and audi have power always going to all wheels and it's usually split up 60/40 or so until slippage occurs, then more power gets sent to the gripping wheels.

the AWD has very bad fuel economy, it is somehow slower, and it provides really no advantage over a RWD unless you have to deal with snow on a regular basis.
the oil consumption problems seem to be a new issue that is occuring with owners. currently, I think I might be suffering some oil consumption, but I am not sure, i will have to wait a few more weeks to find out for sure.
May I ask what year/model G you own, how many miles, auto or manual? I really hope you arent suffering oil consumption, because that would suck.
I know the AWD gets worse mileage 17 city/24 hwy, compared to the RWD 19/26. If I do infact get the RWD sedan, i would get some good snow tires and sand bags for winter or maybe even store her, and keep my current car as a beater (already is).
ohhhhh, that's what it's called... but is that even really a form of AWD?
i'm not sure if that is the technical name for it, but that is what i've always known it as. and yah it is still AWD because power can be sent to each wheel.
active awd is when power is being sent (in some equation) to all 4 wheels constantly.
passive would be where it is sent to the two drive wheels only and waits for a tire to spin to send it to the other two.

i have a 2003.0 sedan, with 27k miles, auto.
i willl double check today to see if any oil has been consumed over the past couple of weeks
They AWD system is a 40/60 always engaged system. The system can change the split depending on the wheel slipage. My 05 x does get shitty gas millage, about 16 city and 21-23 highway which sucks for a v6. The reason for this is because of the extra weight of the drive system and the fact that the engine is driving all the wheels all the time.
Hello all, I drive and 04 G35X with 55K miles on it (my first G). I was wondering if anyone knows what type of transmission oil I need?, what type of differential oil? and if the OEM type (since I still have some warranty time left on G35X). Where can i purchase it?. Also need to have the drive belts replaced, with a transmission oil flush and a differential repalcement done. Does anynoe know much these 3 things may cost to get done? thanks gents..
The types of fluids your car needs are listed in the owner's manual. The owner's manual will also provide the service intervals for those fluids. If your car doesn't have one, you can download it at All About Infiniti. If your car has an automatic transmission, you must use Nissan Matic-J (or J-Matic - I always forget) to keep the warranty intact.
