Default brakes HELP ME!

i had been hearing a wierd screetch that seemed to be coming from the front-passenger wheel. the sound is a screetching noise that occurs when the car is going in really low speeds (not pressing the gas). once the car picks up speed, it seems to die out.

i took the car to the dealer to check to see if the pads needed to be replaced. i got a call soon after saying that the pads were fine, they were just dirty, and they took the liberty of cleaning them for me. so i get my car back, and it still has the same damn @#$%^& noise. it goes away, and comes back, annoying me everytime i go somewhere... and talk about embarrassing...

im not too familiar with brakes, i do understand principles of them, but i need more insight...

somebody help

Hey Smoke,

One of the most annoying things for sure, squeeky brakes. It doesn't sound like they pulled the pads right? It may be something very small could have gotten lodged in there and now is embedded in the pad. It's not common, but it does happen.

Also, the pads can go bad early if they get a sheen to them. This can cause noise too. You'll have lots of pad left sometimes, but the pad surface has been "glossed" over by heat. Sometimes they can remove the sheen, but most of the time I think you're better going with new pads.

You can try re-bedding the brake pads (if the rotor is indeed glazed). Another possibility is that the pad and caliper do need to be cleaned better than the dealership had done.

hey thanx man...

i would understand if perhaps it were the pads when im braking... but the noise comes out when the car is traveling at really low speeds. which is why im all puzzled. plus, i took the car to the dealer, they supposedly checked the pads, and nothing was wrong with them. its very wierd. the glossed theory would make sense, but these guys checked the pads

yeah i was thinking that it might be a blade of grass, or some kind of pepple stuck in between the rotor, and the pad... sucks though, i dont have the tools to remove the tired myself, so i will have to go all the way back to the dealer

im thinking i should take it to a near by brake shop, and ask them whats wrong, then contrast that to what the dealer is telling me.

That would be a good idea to get a second opinion Smoke. You only need minimal tools to access the brake pads and check for yourself. It's just a whole ton easier if you got a lift and air tools (much faster).

Using an impact wrench to secure bolts isn't necessarily the best option Smoke. When replacing bolts you need to secure them to manufacturer specs with a torque wrench.

For example wheel lug nuts, if I remember correctly, are something like 90 ft-lbs of torque. Impact wrenches can torque the nuts down well past this. More is not always better.

someone had the same problem here, i remember them saying a thin metal wire or something was sticking out and scraping the rotor, you might have the same problem.

Cool brakes

If it is coming from both sides, I would have the dealer check, it may be due to that bulletin about the premature wear of the brakes. Hope your car is less than 3 years old and has less than 36K on it! The symptoms sound like it (squeal at low speeds). Just had a friend go in for service on this and he made out with some performance brake pads as that is all the dealer had in stock at the time, no extra charge for Hawks!
