Default Engine Ping?

Is any one else experiencing more enigine ping then you think you should? Obviously octane level is normally the issue here, but I would think 89 octane would be sufficient enough to not get a lot of engine ping. It's only occuring at low RPMs normally after shifting. Curious to know if other MT owners are hearing the same thing and if any one has any good reccomendations on what to do. I've heard to not use fuel additives in these cars. What's the opinion on this?

I say go with 91 octane minimum. The last time I had calculated it, with an average of 15k miles per year, you're only paying a bit over $100/year for the higher octane fuel.

No pinging, but I have an 04 6MT coupe and I use 92 octane.

Thanks GZ. I've just never had a problem with bad combustion before and didn't know if it could be something other then gas causing the problem.

GZire is right. It's the gas, I'll bet. Go with the highest octane available. Remember if you have been running crappy gas it will take your engine a little while to adjust the timing.

Also, you will get higher MPG with higher octane fuel, all things being equal.

Doesn't the sedan say to use premium? The coupe does.

What's yall's opinions on fuel additives? Waste of time and can do nothing but harm? Never really used them because I've never had any issues. I'll start using the best fuel I can of course from now on, but just wanted to know if yall did anything else as well.

Not that I can find, but I'm lazy and knew I could get on here and yall would have more insight then the manual. I would imagine it does some where though if the coupe does since it's the same engine. Are any of yall using synthetic oil yet? I'm at 10,000 miles right now and getting ready for another oil change and might make the switch if the general consensus is good. I know there's been a lot of threads about this, guess I can just read through those.

My manual says not to use any fuel actives. I hear it may cause oxygen sensors to wear out faster, not sure if this is true though.

When you say cheap oil you mean octane wise right?

because I use 93 and 91 from a local store for a very cheap price (compared to big oil). I know that all oil eventually comes from the same place, some companies add additives

Ah, no worries. There are a lot of good trade offs that come with the territory, I'll deal with the yall habit for those. Where in Texas were you? I catch hell about it all the time.

I spent time in Dallas, San Antonio and Houston. I was only there a few weeks each tiime but every time I have been I have enjoyed it. I have always found Texans to be very friendly, even to a guy from Southern Cali! And some hot women!
