Scored rotors at 6,000 miles on a 2005 G35x - UPDATE
I have my 2005 G35x for 3 ½ months with 6,000 miles on it. I was feeling a slight grinding in the brakes when stopping and would also hear a loud brake squeal at times. I had checked the front rotors thru the wheels and felt that both front rotors weren’t smooth while the back ones were still smooth. I took my car to the dealer and they found “excessive rotor runout” on both front rotors although they said the brake pads were fine and couldn’t give me a reason why this would have happened to the rotors. The dealer said that they would only cut the front rotors (which they did) and would not replace them and that everything else should be fine with the brakes.
I’m concerned that there is a defect in either the rotors or brake pads that caused the rotors to be scored in only 6,000 miles. Also, now that the rotors needed to be cut while the brakes and rotors were still under warranty, it means that I might only be able to cut them 1 more time before there isn’t enough left on the rotors to be cut. This means that I may have to replace the rotors sooner than normal due to a problem that occurred within the 12,000 mile warranty for brakes and rotors.
Should I go past the dealer and deal with Infiniti regarding this to try and get them to find out why the rotors were damaged and to have them replace the rotors. I feel that I now have a new car, with overly used rotors and that they will not last as long as they should giving that they’ve already been cut down.
Thanks for any advice you can give.
***UPDATE****
I still felt the grinding and heard the brake squealing after driving the car for 2 weeks after they cut the rotors and noticed that the rotors were starting to get scored again. This time I spoke to the service manager who told me that they would look at the car. After inspecting and driving the car they heard what they called a "severe groaning" from the front brakes and found "hot spots" on the rotor.
This time they replaced both the front brake pads and both front rotors. Now I just hope that this solved the problem and that this isn't a recurring problem with the next set of brakes.
If the dealer does not give you any satisfaction and it happens again (and it just may) I would contract the manufacturer and also look for service bulletins (DEMAND them from your service manager: they are not secret documents), there may just be a bulletin on this and I am sure if there is, someone in here will find it for you. I find the membership here is very helpful in getting info for the rest of us who need it. Needless to say scored rotors (unless caused by a piece of wedged rock or something) are NOT common. My first step would be calling the service manager at your dealer, if you do not have a good rapport with your dealer, call mine: Infiniti of Scottsdale 480-941-0055.
Thanks for your help. I'll probably start with the service manager and see what he says. It can't be a piece of wedged rock or something else since it happened to both front rotors and the entire rotors were scored, not just 1 or 2 grooves.
Don't get too hung up on the one lost "cutting" opportunity. These rotors are light weight for performance purposes and aren't meant to be cut multiple times. I believe my 04's manual said to not cut it at all and just replace them with the pads every time. But if the dealer cut it for you, it should be OK too. I wouldn't race it since it may have a heat capacity issue after cutting, but daily driving (even spirited driving) should be fine. Just replace the rotor with the pads next time as they should be.
But the cause of warping or grooving deserves further attention. Talk to the dealer ASAP if it happens again and find the reason. There are lots of reasons for this. This car is engineered and built very well. Ask them what you may have done that made this happen, and see if you have done any of that. Hope you find the problem.

I could be wrong Smoke. I'll see if I can find where I read it before. I could have had it confused with the Audi A4 that I used to own. I'm pretty sure either one of the two cars are like that. I won't be surprised if they both are. I know when I replaced the brakes on my A4, it was the whole package.
I only found, for my model year sedan, that the normal thickness is 24mm and the wear limit is 22mm. I'll measure mine when I get a chance. If it's close, then I'll know I can't turn it.

Infiniti will probably charge you big time. That's the price you pay for great braking performance and low unsprung mass (handling). But I'm expecting to find reasonable prices on the internet (for my non-Brembo ones). Last time I got a set for my A4, it was from the original brake supplier to Audi but sold as aftermarket. And it was only $240 for 4 rotors and 4 sets of pads. That's reasonable. This time, I want to change it for free before the initial warranty ends since I got the mail from Infiniti.

I have had no trbls with mine but bet your ass I will get both the rotors and the pads replaced before 3 yrs or 36K miles under warranty. Thank God for service bulletins on bad brakes.

I'm confused. Service bulletins? There is warranty on brake pads and rotors?

what i dont get.. is why the warranty is so high
The earlier G35's had tremendously powerful brakes -- very aggressive brake pad materials. They generate lots of dust, can be a little loud, and certainly don't last very long. But boy, when it comes to performance (combined with the high performance tires), earlier magazine tests showed numbers better than most Ferraris -- no kidding (151 ft from 70 mph to 0). Similarly aggressive brakes have always been used on BMW's and Audi's (like I've experienced with my A4). The owners of those brands have come to expect the high cost associated with that brand. So they don't complain as much about having to do a $1000 brake job every 30k miles. Infiniti, having a shorter history of being a luxury car, has more owners complaining about these costs.
There is nothing "bad" about these brakes. They are awesome. It is rather a wonderful gesture for Infiniti to stand behind their products and introduce free replacements for the earlier model years. Actually, I found out later that at least BMW is doing the same thing.
Buddy, I don't know if your model and year is covered. Check with the dealer, or better, Infiniti.

from your sig, the only thing different that i see about our cars is that you have a sedan, so if you have it......i better have it too i'll check it though
did you get this brake warranty as a standard coverage, or did you have to pay extra
