Good luck with the teaching; hopefully you will get students with parent's that are realistic (not thinking their kid would never do wrong) and are actively involved with their education. Try not to get caught up in the politics and don't let the older jaded teachers affect your views of both groups of students and the administrators (they're not all evil, most are actually friendly and helpful if treated like a fellow human).

Thanks for the great advice. I have taught for Torrance Unified and now I teach in Compton Unified. Believe me its a big difference... the way the school is ran and the way parents and students are. It's all in the way the community is. I love teaching in Compton and love being there for the kids. It's always nice when kids want to come to my class. They even get mad at me if I am absent for a day. It's so cute. But, even though I love teaching them, there are so many things that sometimes make me miserable and unmotivated... the fact that my district is very much disorganized and parents seem uninvolved in their child's education. It's heart breaking. Hopefully when I graduate from USC with my doctorate in Educational Leadership, then I will be able to finally make an attempt to make a real change in the education system.

My in law left his management position at home depot (banking about 100k) to become a teacher. He was jobless for about 2 years to go back to school fulltime to get his degree. He then became a sub for another 2 years, while working on his masters.

He now has his masters and for some reason, is teaching elemenatary school students. He enjoys it so thats all that matter.

I think HS teachers deserves a raise. They have to put up with guys like Neft who act out and tell Yo Mama jokes during class times has to be annoying and rude.

I think all teachers need a raise! Yes, I agree with you. Teachers put up with a lot. It makes you think what ever happened to good parenting skills? I swear, everyone who has a child should be required to take a few parenting classes. I believe it all starts in the home. If you have a parent that does not know how to raise a child, then you will have an unruly child. Why should the child listen to the teacher, if he/she doesnt even listen to their own mom or dad?

i've heard good arguments on both sides. i think the starting salary should be increased... but i saw something about teachers in NY wanting raises but the median salary up there was something like $60k for public school teachers, including 2.5 months off in the summer.
