I tried to get a key cut at Walmart and they couldn't do it-they didn't have the right shaped key. The Infiniti dealer said the keys had to come from the dealership. There is a computer chip in the key that communicates with the ignition and computer, and they all must mesh together. If you had the correct shaped key and tried to use it without first setting the computer, the theft deterent functions would shut down the car and none of the original keys would work. Your car would be dead in the water until reset by the dealer. A full functioning key is $129. A valet key(that also has the radio chip), that allows starting the car, but will not open the glove compartment or trunk is $109. A door key (without the radio chip)that will not start the car is $9. All these prices are from Grubbs Infiniti in TX. I don't know what a replacement fob costs.
It sucks...but look at it this way.....
It's only 100 bucks to get the key. If you don't get it, your $40,000 car becomes an overpriced driveway cover.

I've seen keys with remote sold on eBay -- should be cheaper than dealer.
On some of the boards there were posts about reprogramming the security system to accept new keys...up to 3 and the 4th gets cycled out -- may want to check to see if you can program existing and new key over and over to cycle out old key.
I think the keys also have a chip too, so a Walmart cut key will probably only be a valet type key.

They won't allow you to start your car. You must get a key that the computer(ECU) is programed to recognize or the ECU will shut down your car. It then will have to be taken to the dealer and reset.

Not a valet, but a door key. If you want a key to start your engine, it has to come from Infiniti.
sorry, this is sorta a change of subject but kind of similar...
does anyone know about switching key fobs with other Infiniti models?
When the M comes out, I'd like to try to use that key fob... I love the way it looks. However, I'm not sure if they work on the same "system" or whatever.... I asked the dealership this weekend and the guy did not know. He just said he'd have to try it when they get them in??
