Default Stock 17" Coupe Rims Fit Over Brembo Brakes...

Here's proof:

Thought I'd test these stock 17" coupe rims out before I mounted the snow tires. The only problem I see is the lack of clearance. There is about 1.5-2.0 mm of clearance between the wheel and the bottom of the Brembos. I have found some spacers online that can give an extra 3/16" (about 3mm). Then the issue becomes using longer studs since you only get 10 turns out of the lug nuts with the stock setup. Is 1.5-2mm enough clearance to be safe? I had thought about autocrossing these crappy goodyears that came on the 17's before I mount the snows too; but again, the clearance might still be an issue. Thoughts?

I probably wouldn't do it. It looks awful tight. If you ever picked up any road debri through there it would hang it up for sure probably damaging the Brembos. With it being winter you know you will pick some crap up like cinders and ice.

I'm not especially concerned with ice and debris. Ice is relatively soft, so I don't think it would hurt much. I'm more concerned about any movement of the brakes or flex in the wheels under a load (normal or extreme driving conditions). The question is whether I should go through the trouble of getting spacers and longer studs or not...

Mike, if you ran over snail snot, it would scrape. I hate to think what a booger would do. Since the clearance seems to be a problem to the outside, how about a small spacer? Say 1/8"?

Well I got a couple of Mechanical Engineering buddies of mine to take a look at it. They both agreed that I should be OK running without a set of spacers since the calipers can't move, and the wheel really can't flex at the point nearest the brakes. The calipers are bolted directly to the spindle just as the wheel bearing is bound to the same fixed point. I took it for a drive with the one wheel swapped for about 5 miles with some hard turns and significant bumps. After inspection, not a scratch. I think I may order some spacers anyway. If I can get 7 turns out of the lugnuts I think I'll run with spacers. I'll give it some more thought...

C-Mike. If you go with spacers and these are for snow tires only, I don't see any problem. It's a much cheaper solution than going out and sinking a whole bunch of money for other rims.

Hehe, man they don't call you crazy for nothin'! I would scour the forum classifieds for the thickest spacer possible that did not require longer studs. I'm guessing they'll be much cheaper than any caliper/wheel repairs on the chance you do have a problem, and well worth the cost for your peace of mind.
