I read here that someone bought a platinum center console since their G did not have the wheel package and was going to have a body shop clear coat it before installation so that it did not scratch as easily. Has anyone out there done that? I'd like to see how it looks, becuase it sounds like a great idea. I'm tired of warning passengers that they can look but not touch. [irk]
The entire center console is cheap plastic and will scratch very easily. I've also heard complaints about the door handle and opener scratching; however, at least it's not plastic.
I remember someone saying they were going to do it. The center console is a matte finish. Would not the clear coat make it very glossy? Is there a matte clear coat?
My car is DG. I was going for the effect that the center console is made to look like the exterior; like the waterfall on a Corvette C5 Convertable. Guess you could even have them spray it DG and then clear coat it for the full effect. Not sure about the matte clear coat, but that's a good idea as well.
From past car shows, I've always thought cars with body-painted/clear-coated dashes/consoles look rather tacky. Plus it's going to be incredibly shiny so beware of reflection of the sun while driving. =)

There are a lot of cars, especially older hot-rods and muscle cars that incorporate this. Good point about the glare though. Anyone know of a matte clear coat?
Seems like a lot of trouble for dubious potential results. I haven't found the console scratches that easy. When or if it does and becomes an eyesore or a thorn in my side, I would probably consider just replacing it with something tasteful from:
The coating idea seems like a LOT of work for a possible solution to a 'maybe' problem and when it's all said and done, may look worse (not to mention wear and tear during removal and install) than the original.
I really like the idea of a painted console, very unique. The dash kit store has some great options. I sent for Silver carbon fiber and brushed aluminum samples.

I'm not suffering from scratching on my center console ... at least not yet. I don't reach over there very often, tho. I've also found that any imperfections in the surface seem to completely disappear when you use the Lexol Plastic/Rubber/Vinyl cleaner/conditioner.
I like the matte finish, if someone had a matte clearcoat, I might - MIGHT - consider it. I'd be afraid that I'd have to wax the center console, too, tho. []
