Default rpm delay when idle.. "try it"

well since i have the 6speed i guess im asking the 6speed owners. when not moving and when the car is in neutral or first gear.. there is a slight delay when i step on the gas, its very minimal almost so minimal that u might not even notice unless someone points it out. If any of you guys get a chance.. try it.. leave it in neutral and as u know the gauge usually sits between o rpm and 1.. and ever so slightly just tap and let go.. ( not a lot ) just bare tap the gas and bring the rpm to 1 or 1.5.. tell me if u notice a slight delay in the response.. very curious to f ind out if all our cars are like this.. like i said please dont respond if you havent actually tried it because i know if i read this someewhere before actually seeing for myself i'd say call "bs" too.. cuz its really minimal.. and also i only notice it when in neutral or first gear.. while driving everything seems fine.. thanks

You're right, there is a delay. I think it's because of the way the throttle works. When you push the pedal, you're not changing the engine speed, but simply opening the gate that allows air into the engine. As more air goes in, a feedback system causes the engine to spin faster and faster, but that takes time. So the pedal isn't actually tied directly to RPMs.
Does anyone know if this is correct or not?

I'm pretty sure this will happen in every car.

I might be wrong, but I think CAI will give you better throttle response. I drive an automatic and mine does it really bad. I wonder if anyone around here with a 6MT and CAI can tell us what theirs does.

The free throttle position is determined by the good ol US Gubmint! It's part of the emission controls. Just like when you use cruise control and it will surge once in awhile. Good ol' US Gubmint.

The throttle lag sucks, but you learn to ignore it. Not much you can do about it either. I noticed the same lag when I test drove Z's, maybe it was just me though.

i notice lag on my speedometer. from a stop going to 20+mph, it takes like 2 secs for the needle to move. so far i have never seen the needle at 5-15mph. it is always either at 0 or 15+. for some reason the needle stays at 0 when i dirve slow.

i noticed it in my rpm gauge. When throttled, I feel torque first before the needle moves. weird

Since the drive by wire throttle is electrical and not mechanical, I would like someone to try it who has a grounding kit to see if that makes a difference. I tried it in my 5AT with the grounding kit in neutral and saw maybe a slight delay in the rpm needle. However, if I closed my eyes and listened to the reponse of the engine I do not hear any delay. Sounds like what IvoryGT was descibing as well when feeling the torque.

03' G35 6MT Coupe, Aero Package and yes, I get that too. I just attributed it to the drive by wire setup when I noticed it and I did notice it before I even took the car home from the dealer. It's not anything that really bugs me though.

I'm thinking about trading in on a BMW 745 Li, which I drove the other day. Awesome car. Point being, it has an electronic steering system and talk about a weird feeling. I really noticed the difference and it took me most of the test drive to get to know it. The only reason I am mentioning this is simply to state the fact that the way cars used to work and the way they are going to start working, i.e. electronically instead of being "hard wired" with gears and cables and rods and connectors, etc. therefore the way they respond and feel are not going to be what we are accustomed too not too far down the road.

Back when I had my 330Ci, I had the same issue. I think it has something to do with the drive by wire throttle. I actually took it to the dealership to get it looked at and they said it was totally normal.
