Default Can u hear ur transmission?

Hi guys,

When I am accelerating i.e. when the transmission is delivering torque to the wheels, I hear this slight grinding/rubbing noise coming from the transmission. The noise goes away if I let off the gas pedal. Earlier (around 600 miles) this noise was subdued and I could hear it only at low RPM's and in low gears. I took the car to the dealer and they said that the noise was normal since the transmission has to deliver that much torque to the wheels. I dont have any problems shifting, although the shifts are a little notchy.
Now (around 3600 miles), the sound is a little more pronounced and I can hear it even when in 6th gear. How I would love to eliminate this irritating sound and listen to the pure grumble of the engine and the exhaust!!!

Is this normal? Do you guys hear this noise too? If this is normal, can I eliminate it using some other transmission fluids?

I have a 2004 6MT (bought it in Sept '03). I hope I didnt buy a lemon!!!!

Thanks

Got about 800 miles on my 6MT and nada yet. You have been pressing the clutch ALL THE WAY to the floor on shifts, right?? There is a warning about this in ur manual.

Actually, the sound I have is more like a racing transmission with gear whine. Personally, I like it.

What does this gear whine sound like? Is it like a grinding/rubbing noise? Also, do racing transmissions sound different? Never driven a performance car before...

I find the shifts go way smoother if I'm all the way on the floor. The clutch will engage/disengage before that point but the shifts are a bit jerky for me that way. I've only owned manual shift cars all my lift and mostly sport cars so I'm no newbie at this.

I also tend to heed the warnings of the folks that designed, engineered and built the car. If they say that there is a possibility of transmission damage if you don't push the clutch all the way to the floor, why doubt that?

I'm about to the 1100 mile point and no transmission noises yet that I'm concerned about. I'm not sure I could hear it over that lovely exhaust sound anyway.

i have the exact same problem. It is very pronounced in the morning in 3rd gear. After the engine warms up, the sound goes away. But, it is noticible in 6th gear all the time.
It isn't loud but very irritating.

did u take it to the dealer? wat did they say? I just want to know where that noise is coming from and that there is a valid reason for that noise.

No, I can't hear the transmission beyond what you'd expect from a rear wheel driven six speed. I can, however, spell out words in a fashion that both makes it simple to read my posts and doesn't make the first scribes of the language cry.

[/quote]It's definitely not a grinding noise, it's more like a machine whine.
