Default Wider tires on 19" wheel?

Apologies if this has been discussed before but it's hard to search this topic...

My wife has a coupe with the 19" wheels and she's afraid to park the car next to curbs due to the high risk of wheel scrapes. Infiniti made a bad decision in slecting a tire that is too narrow for the wheel (IMO). On my truck tires the raised portion near the rim is even stamped "rim protector".

Is there a replacement tire that is just wide enough to protect the wheels?

Thanks

i'd check MYG37.COM - INFINITI G37 (SKYLINE) FORUMS, GALLERY, CHAT, AND MORE. and see what people are putting on there.. i think i've heard of some doing up to 275s on the back... i'd like to see what it looks like. i know i'd def like wider tires.

I did some research on tirerack and even they list optional sizes -

Original Equipment Front Size 225/40-19
Original Equipment Rear Size 245/40-19

Front Optional 19" 245/35-19
Rear Optional 19" 275/35-19

I was curious what the stats comparison is (rear)-

245/40/19 = Diameter 26.7''
Section Width: 9.6''

275/35/19 = Diameter 26.6"
Section width 10.8"

So you gain more than an inch in width at the same diameter.

The OEM 19" rear wheels are only 8.5" wide, so that is the limiting factor for going to wider tires like 275/35-19. Check the rim width specs for the wider tires and you will see. I have heard of some people going to wider tires, though.

First of, let me say hello alexh, and welcome to 6MT.

I see where you're going here, in theory it makes sense, but only to a certain degree. In all honesty, if you and/or you're wife is hoping to find immunity from curb rash by getting tires with more bead overlap/rim protector/cushion feature/whatever, I'm afraid you're going to be very disappointed. It will help against some very light curb contact (mostly just parallel contact), but add any kind of angle or speed to the curb contact and I'll guarantee you, your wife will scuff those rims regardless of the tires. ............sorry!

I'm teaching my daughter to drive and parallel parking is not going too well. I just get her out there for LOTS of practice (of course- NOT with my G and the 19" wheels). Tell your wife she just needs to get some practice, but be sure to book a doghouse or hotel room first.

welcome to 6MT. truck tires are different than car tires... they usually do overlap quite a bit. that has to do not only with the width, but the profile as well. tires generally bow out (convex)... so the higher the profile, the further the tire will bow out from the wheel. if you get a low profile tire, it's not going to offer much protection regardless of how wide you go. if you go around bumping into curbs with a 275, you'll still damage the wheel more than likely. just be careful and mindful and you'll be OK.

tireracks suggested size of 275 can't be mounted on the stock rims, can they? that's just the recommended size for proper tire diameter, not what can fit on our rims. For commonly available tire sizes, and to keep proper tire diameter, you can't really go bigger than what you already have without buying a different wheel.

the only thing i can think of would be to use the OEM 17's... the sidewall would probably be tall enough to prevent scrapes.

I don't remember the actual widths of the 19" rims but I think its F=8.5" R=9" or 9.5"
That being said tire rack lists the rim width as
8"-9.5" for the 245/35/19
9"-11" for the 275/35/19

Just click on the "SPECS" tab for each tire to get all the useful information for whatever tire your looking at

It's actually 19x8.0 Front and 19x8.5 Rear.

I think that certain model wider tires would help for something like an automatic carwash, but not for parallel parking. You'll just have to be careful. If you're worried, just tell your wife to lower her right side mirror so she can see the wheel.

i'm pretty sure people were putting 275s on the stock 19s....

it's really only 15mm each side of the wheel... and the stock tires already sit "inward"
