Default K&N Filter and cold air intake

I’m very new to performance cars, and I am slowly learning from spending my time in this forum. [grad][cheers] I would like to get the extra few ponies that I would get by installing a cold air intake and perhaps putting in a K&N filter (even though someone stated that they could not tell the difference). The one thing stopping me is the noise. I have heard that it’s “nice” and “not too loud”, however, that means nothing to me.[dunno] Is there anyone in the ATL area that has installed one and could perhaps let me listen to their G? Or does anyone know if there are audio clips online [phones]of how it would sound?

I have the K&N and the 350Z intake, and the noise is not bothersome. I don't want my car to be obnoxious and I don't really care if people can hear me, so I think I have a pretty low threshhold for engine noise. I'm not sure if that helps.

Also, I don't think you'll be able to get a good idea from internet sound clips. Most computer mics and speakers can't really capture sound accurately enough to be meaningful.

Thanks for your input struan. I think I would consider myself also having a low threshold for engine noise. Your input helps a lot. How many ponies did you get w/ the 350z intake? Is that the stock intake for all z's? I have a friend with a Z, so I assume that if driving around in a Z doesn't bother me, then I probably wont have any problem with it's intake in my car.

No idea. I've heard 2-5; that seems within the margin of error of a dyno, so I don't really see any point in testing it.

Right, it's stock on all Zs. The G will still probably be quieter due to differences in the exhaust.

with so little extra hp, what are the advantages to such mods? Better mpg? Less maintenace on the air filter?

Um
Um
Well, at ~$5 per hp, it's very cost-effective
And it's fun to mess with your car
And people who don't work on cars at all are impressed

But I would say it's mainly a placebo.
