if im correct, i htink gardener use to be a cop, so i have a question for u gardiner. here goes:
how does the radar work? i mean i know how it works, but can u turn it on while driving? or do u have to be parked somewhere? if ur driving on the freeway and u see me driving fast (few feet away) do u turn on ur radar or do u get behind me to judge my speed....these might be stupid questions, but i just wanna know...
There are different types of radar, the old ones you had to be sitting still. The new can clock you coming toward or away from the unit, even with the unit moving. The old ones had to stay on to be stabilized, the new ones are just like shooting a gun, point and shoot. When the trigger is pulled you are almost certain to be clocked. Different states and counties can have different rules on how and where radar is run. Lidar is the name for the laser units, they are even more accurate and very quick, almost no warning at all when it is being run ahead. The target pattern is very narrow compared to radar. Lidar units even have sights on them so the operator can hit his target.
A LEO can pace you to determine your speed, that is done in places where the cannot run radar usually.
Is pacing legal? That seems to be so error-prone.
Also, how close do they have to have to be? It seems like you'd notice someone pacing you. Or can unmarked cars do it?
Police cars have certified speedometers and all work on the cars has to meet certain standards. Any work on the transmission or tires/wheels cannot change the speedometer reading.
In Georgia, an umarked car cannot pull you over, it has to be marked. In Alpharetta they have white cars with light gray markings. Legal but very sneaky.
So where in a city is radar not permitted? Is it not allowed near broadcasting antennaes, or Television stations? What are the regulations for use by an officer.
It is road specific, the road has to be approved for radar use. It has to do with line of sight and other factors. For an officer to use radar, they have to attend class for it and be approved and licensed to use it. That is why those so called radar jammers that RMR sells are a joke. They do not need a license to operate because the don't transmit anything that could jam a radar unit.
You ever hear of the rule that a parked police car has to have on their "Park Lights" when looking for and radaring speeders? ie. they cannot be totally hidden in the dark?

I think that is the law in Florida.
Gardiner: I have some more "philosophical" question about cops and radar/speeding:
How seriously do most cops take breaking the "letter of the law"? Do most cops hate giving out speeding tickets?
I know that up in here in Ontario most police officers won't even look at you unless you're going more than 30km/h over the speed limit on the highway.....UNLESS there is a "blitz", in which case they'll pull you over for going only a few km/h over the limit. What annoys me is the inconsistency – behavior that is acceptable one day will get you a $300 ticket the next.
2nd, are cops more likely to pull over poor young people? I'm fairly young, and my previous car was a "junker". If I rode through town after 11 pm wearing a backwards-facing baseball cap, I was sure to be pulled over for going only a few km/h over the official speed limit.
After I purchased my G35 Coupe, I found that the cops would leave me alone. On several occasions I've blown by radar traps doing much more than the legal limit, but I've never been pulled over. Last night I had a cop rush up behind me as I was doing 140 km/h on the 407 highway. He paused near me, then charged ahead and pulled over a pick-up that was travelling slower than I was!
Is it that cops feel that someone driving an expensive new car is less likely to be a troublemaker? Or are they afraid that rich people are more likely to go to court to fight a ticket? Or are they in intimidated by people driving nicer cars than their cruisers?
I would have thought that the police would be more likely to issue tickets to rich people, as they can afford to pay for them! But what I'm experiencing suggests the opposite.
1. If you write tickets you have to go to court, that really sucks. Most LEO in Georgia cannot write a ticket for less than 10 over the speed limit. You wold have to be going 51mph or greater in a 40 mph zone. State troopers do not have to follow this rule, than can give you a ticket for just a couple of mph over the limit.
2. If you look like a punk expect to be treated like one. That is part of the game, the trick is to blend in with the crowd. I liked to ticket people who really drove bad in traffic. Did not matter what they drove, if everyone is doing 80 in a 55 and some guy is zigzagging through the pack running 81 he would be the one to get it.
Avoid bummper stickers that make statements like "Down with Bush" or "Down with Clinton". Your bumper sticker could make the difference of a warning or a ticket.
And the best advice is never tell a cop to "Go f.. off". I know of one case where that happened and the officer brought in several buddies to make sure he did not miss anything that was wrong with the guys car. When it was all said and done the guys car was towed away as being condemned for highway use.

So I should get a bumpersticker from a police fundraiser and put that on []
The prevalence of those stickers is a joke. My mother, who is never pulled over, has 5 of them on the back of her Jeep. What's best is seeing them on Escalades that ride on 20's. Regardless, I don't think that they matter. When you are conspicuous- you are pulled over. If you have a tattoo on your face, it is a great misnomer to think that they will provide you with any more immunity to a ticket than politeness. I suppose it is only a matter of opinion, but I cannot understand putting ANY stickers on a car- especially the G. [hammer]
