Post Brakes/Rotors

I looked thru most of the brake/rotor threads out here and so far havent had all my concerns addressed. So here's the deal. i'm at 37.5k miles. Dealer says my front pads/rotors need replacement. They say my pads are at 2mm (they replace at 3mm), and rotors are at 28.15 (left) and 28.2 (right), minimum should be at 28.4 they claim. what do these rotor numbers mean? i saw in one of the threads that min should be 1.xx inches. do i need to replace my rotors? obviously they gave the $1300 rotor price scam on me w/o labor, but offered aftermarket drilled ones for $500/pair, dunno the brand. so if i need to replace these, any good reccomendation of where/what to buy, looking for slotted. of course i'm looking to save a penny if i can and not sacrifice too much performance/life. i know i had my rotors machined once before. i tried looking for a tutorial to change rotors on g-owners but only found brake tutorial, how hard is it to change the rotors urself? im slowly trying to be less dependent on mechanics/dealers. any help will be appreciated.

i hevent replaced my brakes yet on this car, but on previous experience its easy, especially with rotor as opposed to drum brakes. the rotors just slide off. i would go buy a set at your local parts store. On the american cars ive changed they were like 30-50 bucks each, and the ones for the G should be under a 100 a pop. For brake pads id go with some type of ceramic, i heard the hawk ones are good and they run under a 100 for a pair. so your looking at under $300 for parts and about 2 hours of your time. this would be the most cost efficient along with being similar to stock.

Here's one vendor you can look at:
http://www.grubbsperformance.com/Mer...5CoupeBra kes

The dealer is almost correct about the pads. You change at 2 mm, but you are so close you should replace them now.

The rotor thickness you are giving is in mm. 25.4 mm is 1.00 inches. You probably have the rotors that are 30.0 mm in standard thickness. The wear limit for this rotor is 28.4 mm. My numbers match that of your dealer and I'm looking at the service manual, so the dealer is giving you true numbers.

So what this means is you need new rotors and new pads. Getting nearly 38,000 miles off of the set isn't too bad for the type of car we own. Now the price for the rotors is a bit pricey, so I'd look at a brake guy to replace your rotors and pads. If you are moderately mechanically inclined you can replace the pads and rotors with minor hand tools.

ic, that's for the info. the rotors in the provided link states that it cant be used with brembo brakes. i guess i can check out the other posts for rotor suggestions, basically looking for what most ppl are...the most bang for your buck. yea i'm looking to change the pads myself and wondering if the rotor replacements are just as "simple" as the pads. thanks

Go to Tirerack, http://www.tirerack.com/ ... look under brakes

Hawk HPS Pads, PowerSlot Power Slot Roters (they are directional, you order front right, front left, rear right, rear left) or PowerSlot Cyro-treated

They don't look like they could be the right rotors.

There is no such thing as a G35 without VDC. Also, the rotors listed say they also fit the 2002 Nissan Altima. The Altima has 16" wheels, the G35 Bremo's won't clear most 17" rims (too big).

The Pads are the Hawk ceramic - I would use the HPS composite.
