Why is everybody always trying to increase horsepower, bolting on parts that are expensive, and dont really do that much for performance. I read the last roadntrack and they had a g35 in there with 100,000K worth of mods... and still only 5.0 0-60 and 12.9 quarter mile.
We have fairly good power at the flywheel, (2005, 298/260), why not put that to the ground better. We lose 50-60 horsepower and 30-40 torque to the wheels.
Weight reduction - It's very tough to shave weight off modern unibody cars. You can lose the air conditioner, rear seats, power controls, etc. but in the end you'd have been better off going with a boosted Civic. It's un-luxurying a luxury car.
Lightweight flywheel - Definitely something to look at for those that don't want to go FI. However, if it's too light then you lose the everyday driveability. A lightweight flywheel in heavy traffic is not my idea of fun.
Lightweight wheels - Definitely something to look at. I'm running Volk 18" forged wheels. I figure I'm probably about 6 lbs lighter at each corner in unsprung weight. An even more beneficial way to lose weight is to go with even smaller wheels 17", but hey I'm not racing the car (yet) so I'm staying put.
Wider rear tires - Yes it would help, but you also get more rolling resistance, so it's a trade off.........costlier tires and probably a reduced mpg in favor of putting more power to the ground. If you're really interested in getting the most, you might want to run 17" wheels with a drag tire (street legal tire).
Now on a side note about the car. It was supposedly set up for drifting not 1/4 mile. If the guy was a balls-out 1/4 guy the car would be much faster in the 0-60 and 1/4 times.

Does anybody have the exact weight of a 2005 g35 coupe with sunroof, and one without?
Sorry, I forgot the exact weights. I haven't looked at those specs in years. What you don't see in the specs too is the car without the sunroof is a stiffer structure than one with it.

It's not enough weight to make a difference. Maybe if you lost all the tools plus the spare and ran with run-flat tires. While shaving weight in general is good, shaving unsprung weight is always better.

I can't think of too many things you can take out, unless you want to kill the AC and covers.

Actually I think that's probably a good idea. BMW has run things in their 3 series like that for a long time.

He took it into Jiffy Lube for an oil change. He witnessed the servicing of the car while he was waiting. They said they did everything he wanted and even check and topped off the water on his maintenance free battery.
He said, "Wow I didn't even see you pop the trunk."
They said, "Why?"
He said, ".......because that's where they keep the battery." Also refill water on a maintenance free battery? WTF?
BTW the E46 M3 is circa 1994, so it's a different model year than the one mentioned above.
