It should be spelled out in your contract. However typically most manufacturers will let you use a certified (i.e. ASE) mechanic to perform and sign off on the servicing.
So unless you or your brother are certified, you're not going to be able to perform the servicing yourself.

it would never be an issue unless your car is beat to death. they may ask for records and thats why something liek that could be put into the contract.
they are not gonna ask for records when you turn in your lease. they did not when i turned in my Maxima.

I agree . . .
I have leased 3 vehicles in the past, they NEVER ask for proof of maintanence or oil change records. The car has to be returned in a saleable condition, free from noticeable abuse. If the car has a dent in the fender . . . they are going to want that fixed. If you have stone chips on the front bumper that is usually accpetable.
Essentially the vehicle has to be able to pass a safety. A few other things: If the tires are bald they will want tires on the car that pass. If the brakes are completely worn they are going to want those replaced.
They will ask whether you have had a collision, they will usually want details so if there are any problems they can make a claim to your insurance company.
When I returned my last lease I was told something I did not know, despite never wanting to do this, they will not accept two different kinds of tires on the same axle.

Consider yourself lucky guys. If ever there is a warranty issue and they go back to check your records and you are found to not have complied with warranty requirements, you are in a world of hurt.

doubtful. i know dozens and dozens that have and continued to have leased. never kept/needed records.
like i said in an extreme example (obvious negligance) they could use that.. but in a real world senario, come on... be real.

oo and on top of that -- go back to the "ASE certified friend" (which i have one)
there would be no records of when and how services were completed. how would they even know who did or if it was even really done. THEY CANNOT FORCE YOU TO USE THEIR PEOPLE.
unless extreme negligance was shown and proven - it would never even hold up in a court of law ... (and like they would even go that far...)

well if you don't do the oil changes at the dealership i just highly recommend to have my customers keep the receipts and come in for 7500 and 15000 mile check ups in case any TSB's show up.
Good to know. I got my G from Infiniti of Chantilly in Northern VA. They were offering all services for the first two years free, including the 30k, but I wondered if I had to take it back to them for the maintainence after that.
Msb, the proof of service would be through the records you keep for the maintenance. It could be receipts from the service or the signature of your friend on the service manual for the car.
One of the issues that will arise during a warranty claim is proof that you have followed the manufacturer's requirements.
Again, go back in and look at your contract for the lease. That legal and binding contract should spell out what is required. I purchased my vehicle so I don't know what the standard lease is like. However if I was a manufacturer I would make sure the users know what they are required to do in order not to void their warranty.
LOOK AT YOUR LEASE AND LET US KNOW WHAT IT SAYS.
